Done properly, the squat can be used to avoid knee injuries...

no, i already have injuries -- more defects, really -- that make it extremely painful/near impossible to perform squats with proper technique. sorry if my original posts description of my condition was hazy.

I agree about leg press machines completely. However, I do think that machines have a place for rehab or when some kind of physical limitation prevents the use of free weights. . . e.g. the situation here.

why, do you feel that squats cause muscle imbalances or negatively affects some notion of ideal body posture and alignment?
