The cast of Mad Men smoke herbal cigarettes on set which does not contain any nicotine. But apparently it smells pretty bad.

I don't think the smoking is unrealistic historically. I worked in the advertising department of a newspaper in the mid-to-late 1980's and nearly everyone smoked at their desks. When I moved on to a Madison Ave. Ad Agency in 1990, many people smoked in their offices and even in public spaces on a regular basis despite the NYC safe workplace laws put in place to stop this. I can't imagine what it would have been like in the 60's.
