In my experience, it is no surprise that most successful college-town drinking establishments are owned by semi-degenerate older men with a lot of capital, modest income expectations, a lecherous taste for eye-candy employees, and an unwillingness (or a canny faux unwillingness) to confront the more popular employees about drinking on the job, stealing from the till, and giving away a lot of free drinks. Really successful, long-running college bars have a black market quality to them.

Give it an 80s theme and all the students will come. It's been proven time and time again that college kids can't resist the 80s. Name the drinks "The Boy George" and "Wham!". Ask your bartenders to voluntarily get mullets. Have them wear parachute pants, white shirts, and bolo ties. Have the waitresses wear headbands. When it's time for the drink to arrive, play a clip of "whoahhhh here she comes" by Daryl Hall and John Oates and have the server moonwalk the drink over. Have a Karaoke night where only 80s songs are on the list and throw a Patrick Bateman lookalike contest. Serve Frusen Glädjé for dessert.

Typical of most undergrad biz majors I encounter (I am one myself), it sounds like you have no concept about how much work, money or risk there is involved. Too many of my peers have silly ambitious dreams they babble on and on about, when in reality nothing will ever materialize. Owning a bar in your college town qualifies as this surely. Yes it may seem "cool", but in reality you'll get fried. Have you ever spent a day in the industry?

.

Well I do have somewhat of a concept of how much work, money, and risk there is. Like I said, my family owns several successful businesses that they started from the beginning and I've grown up being a part of that. And I've also mentioned that I'm a bartender and work at a vineyard and winery.

Your plan seems a bit all over the map. So far, I've read that your bar will be a restaurant and wine bar with both a sports bar and lounge/club atmosphere ft. live bands, dancing, and college night(s)???

Simplify your target market and what you will offer: 1) A wine bar w/ live music/jazz that offers variety of farm fresh/organic appetizers such as cheese/cured meats; 2) A lounge; or 3) A sports bar that offers fine wine. With your current plan, the public will not be able to identify what you or you business have to offer, which will cause things to go south quickly. You place needs to have a solid identity!

Shockingly accurate.
