This is from a while ago... But you're pretty much the same size as me, based on your height and weight.

Hey,

I've been lurking on this specific thread for awhile, and decided to register and participate in the conversation. I am frequently shop at j crew, mostly online.

I had a few questions:

The vintage slim fit jeans--do these fit differently when they are made of selvedge denim? I read someone's post that said they hated the fit of these, but not in the selvedge. Also, a lot of people seem to not like the denim quality or price...is the selvedge worth it if it's on sale for less than 100?

Also, anyone with the red wing irish settlers or rugged classics...what is your experience with wearing them? Are they worth the cost? What do you wear them with (pictures appreciated)?

Finally, are the timex military watch bands .5"? I've read that somewhere and I have an almost identical watch to the timex, but I've never actually seen the watch/band that j crew sells.

Thanks

I have a pair of Irish Setters, and they are great boots- sturdy and quite comfortable after an initial breaking in period. I picked them up pretty cheaply off eBay, so you might want to take a look over there.

The watchbands are larger, 11/16" or so.

Thinking of picking up the messenger bag this weekend. Anybody else have this or see it in the store? Thoughts?

Thanks! Yeah, I've looked on there. I'm looking at the sizing, which seems to be really varied. I've heard they run large, and I usually wear a 9.5 to 10.5. I'm trying to decide whether to get a 9 or even an 8.5 as the sizing has ee (extra wide). Also, what do you usually where them with? I'm looking for winter boots with jeans and chinos.

Robert, what exact messenger bag are you talking about? I've seen the classic leather one in a store about a month ago.

Think this is a newer version. Oiled cloth. $98.

I have both boots and if you're looking for something even remotely stylish I'd go with the rugged classic - dark wood or hickory. The Irish Setters are too big and clunky for "streetwear" but they are one hell of a good work/hunting boot. Use them as such...

The rugged classics look better with jeans IMO. The hickory comes with ruff n' tough leather - the favorite of RW's chief designer. The only disadvantage is the black sole (brown & black aren't a great match.) Dark wood is the briar oil slick leather and looks better with the black sole. I had to send my original pair back because I was just getting too much slippage. The leather was dark brown with a bergundy tint to it and the manufacturing date was 9/08. I just received the new pair and the leather is straight dark brown, no burgundy and it's dated 7/09 so they are brand spanking new. The burgundy might come out after wear I dunno. I liked the color of the original better. I bought them in a retail store which was probably worn by customers. I will gently walk around in these and if they stay dark brown I might return them.

Sizing: size down .5 from your Clark's desert boot size. If the DB's are a bit roomy you might be better off going with same size.

Here's some pics of each - note the rugged's are not from me and they look more like the '08 version...

I really like the Hickory color.

I just took a couple pics of the "09 version" rugged classic boots. Note I haven't even tried them on yet (need to make sure the size is good and will wait until after I walk the dogs to get my feet hot.)

Anyway, the first pic below looks like straight brown but it's in the shadows. However, when I flex the leather uppers and put them in direct sunlight I can see the bergundy tint. I think it's because the boots are brand new and the thick coat of oil applied in manufacturing darkened them. I'm not so worried about the color anymore, I think after wearing them in they will look similiar to the photo in my last post - which are probably the '08 version that had been sitting around for a year.

Thanks vernon! What shoes are in the second picture? I really like the hickory leather Rugged Classics or Irish Settlers leather versus the darker one. The second picture has the gum bottom, so are those the Irish Settlers? I'm talking about your first response with pictures by the way.

http://images.jcrew.com/erez4/erez?s...if&tmp=prdDtIm Anybody own these or has feedback for the boat shoe? Also should I keep holding out for a 30% code or just cop on the next 20.

Yes they are distressed Irish Setters (they no longer make them.) The third pic is similiar to what you will receive - more of a darker brown. I took a pic of them when I first got them, let me see if I can find it - the leather looked killer.

Here they are - two pics of my boots straight out of the box from last winter. As you can see I also took one next to a Clarks DB in beeswax color. You can see how substantial the Irish Setters are, they dwarf those suckers! I'm a big dude and I just can't get the Irish Setters working in my streetwear steeze, I just feel like I'm wearing clown shoes so fair warning. I've been using them as a work boot and you can see what they look like now several pages back, or just search my previous posts.

I love them, they are not suited for long distance comfort but I love the look with chinos/jeans and are my go-to shoes when I don't want to wear socks. My GF says I look like a dork trying to sport them with shorts because of the higher chuka style, that's the only drawback.

Those do look like monsters next to the DB. I love the crepe sole with the leather though, I'm just not sure how the height would be. I'm concerned with them cutting into my calves or just sitting too high. Then again, the rugged classics don't look like they are too much lower than the Irish Settlers.

Also Robert, sorry I've only seen a leather variety of a messenger bag.

Any thoughts on these? http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/Mens...~~~~/99080.jsp

I know they pin the clothes on the models, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the J Crew selvedge. The color of the denim intrigues me...the final sale makes me hesitant.
