I don't do any work at work

Have we already had a thread on this? I don't do any bloody work at work. I've been here for two and a half hours today and I've taken one phone call. The rest of the time I read Reddit, Salon and SF. I'm leaving in an hour for an hour and a half lunch. In the afternoon I may do some stuff with a spreadsheet and maybe attempt about six phone calls. I just don't give a damn.

It's brutal. Maybe I should go back to school and be a biologist or something.

I can't believe a bigger deal isn't made of this. I feel like productivity has declined exponentially in our society since the tubes were invented. Maybe that's why we have a recession.

I think I heard somewhere that the average American only does about 18 minutes of real work per day.

I've been surfing the web for about four of the five and a half hours I've been at work today. I'd much rather be doing work, but there just hasn't been any of late. Looking forward to a new job.

The internet really destroys peoples work ethic. I dont understand why employers allow employees to access non work related websites, facebook, instant messengers, etc. Even when I'm studying and need to use my laptop the internet is so fucking distracting. Instead of studying I usually end up googling nonsense, watching youtube videos, and reading styleforum.

i believe it. if you're reading mags at your desk, you're fired. if you're browsing web, you are doing research into pop culture and customer behavior.

I work for a small private equity firm and pretend to know what I'm doing.

I found an article indicating the average was 1.95 wasted hours per day or so, but yeah, I'd suggest it's closer to 8.5 for me at this point in my life.

Don't people have their internet usage monitored? I am legitimately on the internet all day for research, and never, ever look at recreational stuff (ok I may check hotmail or do some internet banking... but that's my limit, average 5 or ten mins a day on work time, if that). IT have picked up on our high internet use but as we are doing research work its not been taken further. I know I could get away with it but I don't trust myself - I know it would be a slippery slope leading to demotivation and lack of productivity. The day I check SF on work time I know it will be time to move on.

Nope. All we have is a WiFi network here... and I use my own laptop.

Nah, I'm a playing a biologist right now, and I've done nothing all day but drink a cup of coffee. I have 4 hour incubation times for experiments that only have about an hour of set-up; it's the data analysis that takes the longest, but I do that in front of a computer, so that means 4 hours on the Internet for every hour of analysis.

Damn. Okay, what's a job where I can just walk around in a forest or a tidal inlet and check out cool animals?

It's really bad on my end too. I do survey research for a non-profit and it has been sloooooow. It's only been a month and a half at the new job, but it fucking drags. I need to find a way to keep busy, but I can't help surfing SF and wiki.

I spend about 20 minutes a day on CNN etc at work first thing in the morning. The rest of the day I am working my ass off. I am only posting right now because I have taken some vacation time this month.

Maybe I am doing it wrong.
