How do I get rid of shin splints???? - Page 2

I get them when I start playing soccer again after a few months off, especially in my right (kicking) leg

Its painful but theres not much you can do except manage it through stretching, icing, anti inflammatories, etc

It will go away

Look, I hate making serious posts but really, you don't know what it is and there is no way to be sure enough to risk keep running. It could be stress fractures, or it could be compartmentalization syndrome, both are things you cannot fuck with. If it's hurting, get it diagnosed.

Normally I would agree, but this is benign enough that a trip to an orthopaedist is often a waste of time. The common treatment methods for shin splints involve billing the insurance company and scheduling extra visits. Rest from running and any kind of impact until the pain subsides.

Such a wealth of great advice!

Just to update: it's been a good 3 weeks since I went jogging. I tried ONCE just about 4 days ago and the pain was certainly tolerable during the job, but crept up to a nagging pain after it was over. At that point I decided that I still was not fit for jogging.

A co-worker of mine recommended cycling as a great way to stretch and heal the shins. Interestingly, I went biking last week and my shins felt nice and strong and (comparatively) numb afterwards. I think I'll try to get a biking regimen in.

I'll continue to ice and stretch. If I can find one, I'll also visit a specialized shoe-store in (this very small) town to get properly fitted. I'm wearing decent Nikes right now, but I AM flat-footed and pronate a fair bit. Somebody mentioned getting off-the-shelf orthotics for their flat feet...any recommendations?

Many thanks again, gentlemen. I really, really do miss running!

Great link, btw. Thanks.

Does anyone know if an ordinary MD would have anything useful to say/do about the problem? I'm in Canada so we need referrals and a fair bit of patience before we get to see a specialist.
