I can't stop getting sunburned :(

so uhm, this is kind of a fucked up issue for me. I have to spend about an hour and a half outside a day (walking to and from class, etc) and I'm directly in the beating sun, and it is WRECKING my face. I am totally sunburned, even on my fucking lips, and I keep having those horrible heavy sunburn fever sweat dreams. this is DESPITE using spf 50 sunscreen everywhere.

is there a way to speed my skins recovery? higher SPF dosage? I have super super fair skin, which is compounding the issue.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. SPF is not a good indicator of its effectiveness either. Also ask LabelKing for advice. He eschews the sun. Or maybe borrow a parasol from Kent Wang.

honestly I was thinking about using that hillside bandana to protect my neck, but its too small. might have to buy an EG scarf or some shit

Cover up more and wear a hat. You might look like a tool or whatever but if it prevents you from getting messed up and increasing your risk of melanoma, it might be worth it to you. I've read several journal articles that question the effectiveness of SPF in preventing skin cancer. There is also some evidence that sun damage done early in your life is the major cause. In that case, I'm screwed myself because while I try not to take too much sun these days, I got a shit ton in my younger days and teenaged years.

I got one of those forign legion type hats with tails that wrap around your face. I look like an idiot, but it is perfect protection from the sun. but then again, I don't have to worry about being seen by anybody I might want to sleep with in the future. you might find that too silly looking. and I only really wear it when I am out in the wild, more or less.

but I feel for you

I have to do the sunscreen thing every day - extremely fair skin and living in a sunny climate.

I use sunscreens that have a physical block (titanium and/or zinc dioxide) with no chemical sunscreen (the chemical stuff burns my skin). Many chemical sunscreens do not block both UVA and UVB, so you still may get burned. The zinc/titanium sunscreens will block UVA and UVB.

Neutrogena has a new sunscreen out with just the physical block with SPF 30 and as fair skinned as I am it will work all day if I am sporadically in the sun for several hours. I also use a sunscreen from Dr. Mercola that works very well.

I also agree with others here - get a hat, with a broad brim all the way around. Yeah they suck but I would rather wear one than get skin cancer later. I have a couple of Tilley's that I wear if I am going to be out in the sun for any extended period. A tightly woven panama works well too and looks better. EG has a nice bucket hat (I got one but it didn't look right on me - YMMV).

there is no way I would ever wear a panama. I am 22. I will probably try to find decent hat, and am going to look for al inen scarf

wow, that's rough. One thing I heard is that it takes about 20-30 minutes absobtion time before exposure... so you could be getting 1/2 hour of sun without protection if you're just applying and walking out the door.

I have this problem too (3/4 Irish) and I live in S. Florida. I use this Australian gold stuff IIRC it's only SPF 15 but works for me. Don't forget to use good chapstick.

You're in for a rough ride. I feel teh ghey, but I use a daily moisturizer that is 25 spf. I use it as aftershave and then just go ahead and get the rest of my face, neck, and ears.

It sucks, but genetics are not on our side. I'm 32 and have had three skin cancer surgeries, including a chapstick-sized squamous removed from my neck. And I have never spent much time at the beach or trying to suntan, and I'm not all that pale.

Yeah, because linen scarves just scream out "young", right?

A glove and a knife.

I'll be honest and say I can't remember specifically. I read this shit a while ago and it was mentioned. If I feel bored, I'll see if I can find the articles.
