Recommend me a reasonable all-region Blu-ray player

I'm thinking of getting a Blu-Ray player, nothing particularly fancy, but would like something with the chip that enhances standard DVD playback AND which can play DVDs (if not Blu-Ray discs) from all regions, so that I can play my DVDs from Freedom. Can anyone recommend me something reasonable (e.g. sub-$500)?

Playstation 3?

I believe the PS3 is region locked for DVDs. I don't think there is a good one-box solution out there unless you get a modified player.

Where can one get one of these modified playaz?

I think most of the main-brand DVD/BluRay players can be unlocked with a few keystrokes on the remote. Once you're narrowed down a few models, just go on line and check if the specific models you're looking at can be unlocked.

I've just done it with a Samsung DVD player in my furnished rental.

I haven't been in the market for something, but the ecoustics.com and avforums sites should have plenty of recs.

I spoke too soon --- there is one player that's region-modifiable from the factory: http://www.momitsu.com/bdp_899.html If you went with a kit, I'd get an Oppo BD-83 (besides the PS3, the Oppo's the best BD player out there especially for upconverting DVDs), and do this: http://www.jvbdigital.nl/jvb.asp?cur...tle&title=1041 I've used the JVB people before, and they're good. They also have a US office. --Andre

Wait, so I would have to buy the kit on top of the Oppo codefree BD players shown on the site?

The kit's needed only if you have an Oppo already, and wanted to mod it yourself, or send it in to be modified. I didn't realize they were selling modded BD-83s, but that's certainly the most convenient route, though they do appear to add a $100 premium.

the Momitsu looks attratctive. Do you have any experience with the brand or any caveats for a non-audiophile small-timer?

Just make sure to elevate your cables, otherwise the audio will sound veiled.

It may not run on fish eggs? I don't have any direct experience with the Momitsu, but it might be best to buy from a place with a good refund policy. I hesitate to recommend random unknown brands for BD players, because the format's relatively new and pretty complicated that you may get a really horrible player that doesn't work very well.

RJ, don't forget that Final Fantasy XIII will be releasing for PS3 this year. That is a better reason to buy one than a bunch of froggy DVDs!

Oppo rocks, PS3 sucks at playing dvds and is bulky. I am not an audiophile, I don't play games, I have dvds from all over, including a large bunch of freedom ones. Note that I have a regular upconverting Oppo and don't have a blu-ray yet because the films I like aren't on blu-ray so who cares.

Given the cost of a dvd player, why do you need it all-in-one? Just get a dvd player and get a separate BR player.

How about an HTPC with a BR reader?
