How much can I get away with for carry-ons?

I'm going to be doing some international travel later this year and I would like to avoid checking bags if at all possible. I know the rule is one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a laptop bag, purse etc. Could I get away with a carry-on sized bag, to put in the overhead, and a carry-on sized underseat bag? For example, could I get on with these two?: Or maybe even two of the first one?

Don't be that guy. But I guess a second smallish backpack sized bag might be acceptable.

No I don't want to be the guy that tries to cheat his way onto the plane with five bags, but it seems to me that using my spot in the overhead and then the space under my seat should be perfectly acceptable.

It depends upon the country. The last time I flew from the UK, we were only allowed one item each, period. My wife had to stuff her purse inside of the carry-on.

Not all flights within/between other countries outside of the U.S. allow for more than one bag period, and they adhere to strict size limits. I found this out the hard way.

I think it also depends on airline as well. I've taken both an underseat bag and a laptop bag before, but I've also been on flights where they were pretty strict with the 1 carry-on bag thing.

If you know your itinerary and what airlines you will fly then check with them about bag restrictions. It's well worth the trouble.

Just check with the air line's web site. They will normally have the max L+W+H allowed. But like another poster said, please dont be that guy. I personally keep carry ons to my messenger bag and a back pack.

Thanks for the advice guys. After getting three of the last four bags I've flown with mishandled, I've had enough of checking.

This might be kinda lame but I always have a cheap but somewhat professional-looking sports jacket with lots of pockets.

I'll usually put a couple snacks in it, ipod, maybe my cell phone, and then while I'm standing in line at security I'll put my watch, loose change, etc, etc, in the pockets as well before putting it on the conveyor belt.

After that, it's easy to stow the jacket even if the compartments are almost totally full. I can even fold it and hold it on my lap if I'm in a hurry to get off the plane at the end.

Sometimes I check all my bags, sometimes I don't, but I usually have the jacket.

Keep in mind where you are seated as well. If you are at the bulkhead or exit row, you won't have under-seat space for your bag.

The other thing is that I've never been on a flight that had enough under seat space sufficient to hold a real bag.

the rolling bag is just a little big, the other one is perfect. but, as mentioned, keep in mind that some flights there won't be any space at all.

I use the same system - a rolling computer bag and a tri-fold garment bag.

Same here, I almost always wear some sort of jacket with lots of pockets. For this time of year, it's usually an unlined linen sport jacket that has three inside pockets and external patch pockets, it works very well for holding lots of stuff.

It depends on the airline really. If you fly with any discount airliners (eg. Ryanair) they will screw you over any chance they get in terms of baggace allowance. That is, they typically only allow one carry on bag (and no laptop bag) that is smaller than the industry standard so that you have to pay some sort of fee.

I fly quite a bit and almost always with carry on only luggage. I always use a duffle bag and a messenger style computer bag. The airlines that I fly with have never given me a problem.
