Houston to Hattiesburg

Thread Starter
So I might find myself in Houston for a few days in September after which I plan to drive with teh wife to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and back to visit her foster family from her days as an exchange student. Anyway, I just mapped the trip and it looks like our route will pass through Beaumont, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and Picayune. Are there any interesting things to see, or any food recs there that's worth stopping for?

In Hattiesburg itself, in the historic downtown, there is a very, very good restaurant called, I believe, the Walnut Circle Grill. A lot of fine entrees, and a unique version of bread pudding for dessert (bread pudding is big in the New Orleans area). Also a very good coffee shop on Hardy Street called Cafe Bohemia (the owner deals directly with the growers in Costa Rica, going down there himself every year).

Beaumont has a pretty good Italian joint called Frankie's....right off of i-10 and Lucas. It'll be on the left side if you're coming from Houston. Exit Calder and make a u turn...stay on the feeder and it'll be on the right after the stop light.
