I'm puzzled about this detailing... - Page 2

As a hockey fan I can say that Don Cherry along with Stan Fischler are two of the most knowledgeable hockey experts around.

About the wardrobe, well he IS in entertainment.

Yup...quickly became clear when Googling that he is a big deal. Only excuse is that I am not a hockey fan. I suppose that most Canadians know John Madden or Dick Vitale (would they be equivalent?).

Anyhow...I hate being the typically un-clued-in American, but in this case that's exactly what I was.

I think it would be fair to compare Madden and Cherry. The later doesn't have a hockey game (surprisingly really, though he does have a restaurant franchise) but both built their reputations as coaches with a lot of success -- though Cherry never won the Stanley Cup -- before making the move to commentating. I have been in bars where the patrons shouted at the band to stop playing because Cherry's Hockey Night in Canada segment was about to start.

I'm not Canadian, but I am a hockey fan (I'm from Grand Forks...hockey fans will know where that is; no one else will). Oh yes, I know who Don Cherry is. I suspect Canadians love him not so much for his commentary but for his gruff-but-avuncular personality, as well as his flair. He's that knowledgable, older sort who gets so worked up that he sometimes confuses himself.

There's a former player of his who lives near me, and whe helmets first became mandated, this player was a rookie and so had to wear one. He wore one to his first practice, and Cherry screamed at him something like "take that helmet off, you pussy!" I get the feeling that Cherry, himself, took a puck or two to the noggin.

(This is a strange story, as Cherry has been one of the most outspoken advocates for softening the boards of Canadian rinks to make them safer for the players.)

No. Patch for the butt of a shotgun. Braid is for girl.
