In some ways, health care is very like the military, so to carry the analogy, 24/7, there's an officer of the watch. In health care, it usually takes the form of a manager on call. Usually it's various department heads, "house officers" or "ho's" as they get called by floor staff, etc. No one likes to take call on holiday weekends, so I take one holiday a year, as I'm a big believer of leading from the front.
On a normal weekend, the manager on call would get called only for big things. Fire alarm going off, some disruption like a fight, someone getting found dead in dubious circumstances, etc. Nine times of ten, more an FYI than anything else. But on holidays, people seem to want to bother those not actually there, so things get moved up the chain rather fast. Two of the calls yesterday, was because a VIP was raising a ruckus over something. Something that should have gotten handled by easily by people there.
It's sort of like kids acting out at bedtime on Xmas eve.
