I did that once. Never dropped it in six months of owning it. Did not keep it from getting stolen.

I got a hard shell for my new phone that makes it so if I dropped it face down on a flat surface the screen wouldn't touch, it's just bumped up like 1/16". that's it. to keep it dry I made a dark brown lambskin phone sleeve, which I then coated in a hard wax. I like the way it looks much more than the ridculous mil-spec hoorah shit you get from some of the brands, and the ugly retrofuturistic bright plastic from the others. It's not waterproof, but if I'm walking in the rain and it's in a pocket on my non waterproof vest my phone is still dry.

Even with those two modifications its smaller than a lot of my friend's smartphones.

I have a lot of dark leather furniture . My iPhone is invisible against it so I had to put a fluorescent green case on the damn thing or spend half my life searching of a phone that's a foot away

For the second night in a row, I get back from a half hour evening dog walk thinking, did he pee, should I go back down and make sure.

realized a girl at the office has no eyebrows, yet uses some sort of makeup to paint a curved line in place of living eye brows. she either has A) waxed them off or B) can't grow them yet has a full head of hair....

WTF.

A guy I know's wife has her eyebrows tattooed on and they are horrible. They are way too high and are arced so much that she looks permanently surprised.

We got my mother tattooed eyebrows for a birthday/mothers day gift this year. They're very nicely shaped (almost too well), but it makes her happy since they never grew back. Fortunately they were done well.

I think a lot of people don't even plan to have the children they have. I think what happens is they have a fury in their genitalia and of a sudden there is a "bun in the oven" (soda speak).

I would bet that at least 75% of first children are accidents.

Things I don't get:

Prisons. I am a conservative guy and a Conservative guy; I believe in punishment and criminals paying a price for their actions, but recently I have been asking whether prisons are a sensible idea.

We take people who (generally speaking) have been in the mindset that they either don't care about or agree with societies laws. They do something that we deem deserving as punishment and end up in a prison system. While there they meet hundreds - thousands in the case of long-term inmates - of people with more or less disdain for the law and with more or less skill in violating it. They having nothing to do all day but build up a network of contacts and friends who can (and will) facilitate further crimes in the future. We take from the criminal everything that would allow them a normal life like family, employment and culture and force them to create a new life with the only collection of people who are capable and willing to exist within a criminal mindset. Crazily the harder the prison and the more tortuous the experience the more we produce determined criminals with a super-human tolerance for pain and fear. We basically turn dangerous people into dangerous people with Navy Seal like tolerance for physical and mental strain.

The thing that bugs me is that I cannot think of a useful alternative. Even if you take the view that everyone is capable of rehabilitation and education, basic common sense tells you that not everyone wants that. I haven't got a clue what a better alternative is, but I also cant help but feel we currently have the very worst solution in place.

I'd love to hear the thoughts of any SFers with experience of the penal system....

IMO it's a good topic and you should start a thread on this in the CE.

I stayed away because I'd rather hear an [ostensibly] apolitical thought. Plus I'm not clever enough to follow the discourse in CE most of the time shog[1].gif
