I'm always surprised at how cheap AC is.

I didn't have it most of last summer (someone stole my AC unit from winter storage and I didn't buy one until a big heat wave), but it really doesn't cost much compared to heating for me.

I have a smallish apartment and I can cool it well enough with a single window unit in the living room(although I don't have absurd cooling needs...my apartment's not in the 60s or anything). The only issue with the single unit is that it doesn't work fast, so I can't let the apartment heat up a ton during the day or else the bedroom won't cool down by bedtime (and I suppose it would struggle with baking and heavy cooking).

My AC takes a bit over 500w when running (according to my Kill-A-Watt). It has an energy saver mode where I set the temp, and it will spin the fan for a few seconds every few minutes to get a new temp reading; only turning on when the temp falls low enough (most window ACs spin the fan continuously and just cycle the compressor on and off). It seem to run at 500w less than half the time based on the Kill-A-Watt's kWh tracking.

500W running at less than half-duty is dirt-cheap. I pay 7cents per kwh right now (thats the whole marginal rate including taxes and distribution...there is a ~$10 fixed fee)...costs 42cents per day at half duty. I raise the temps a bit during the day, so its even less.
Even if I cool all 30 days out of the month, it costs less than $13.

Compare that to my heating arrangement. I have 3 electric heaters that I think are 1500W (one or two may be more) that run all winter, as well as a smaller one in the bathroom that I only turn on when I shower in the morning.
I think those run at more than half duty all winter...at 50%, those things run $113 a month and at 75% they are pushing $170.

edit: and yes, I know my utilities are cheap (plus my gas and water are free)...but its a 1BR apartment in the most-nuclear state in America, not a 4000 sq ft house in Connecticut

Yeah... My power costs close to $.40/kWh.

Our heat is natural gas, and is definitely cheaper than A/C.

I don't have AC in my automobile; however, my house has AC.

I started driving when I was 16, and I didn't have a car with AC until I was 20. This was in Florida, and I spent a fair amount of time as a pizza delivery driver. You wanna talk about dealing with heat? Try delivering a hot pizza in a pickup truck with no AC in the middle of the day during August in Florida.

The weird thing is that I didn't really mind it. My first car was built with AC, but the car was a POS, so the AC had long since stopped working by the time I owned it. I actually chose the truck knowing it didn't have AC. The only time I remember thinking it sucked was during afternoon storms in the summer. Rolling up the windows just trapped all the heat and then added even more humidity than was already in the air.

haha, poor people with no A/C

I was just grateful to have a car at 16. We'd only been un-poor for a few years at that point, so the very idea of having a car of my own was icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif.

This is where I trot out the sadly true story of how I worked myself like a dog in my 16th summer and bought the only car the family had.

I'm still poor, brah. I make just enough money to know how poor I am.

Yeah, that sucks. It was kind of my point, actually. My mom had worked insanely hard to improve our SES, and having a car, even a POS, at 16 was a pretty long way to have traveled from where we were a half decade or so earlier.

Also, FWIW, I worked to pay for car-associated costs and taught myself auto mechanics because we couldn't afford to spend tons of money putting out figurative (and occasionally literal) mechanical fires.

Either way, I think we can both agree with the words of Mr. Bubba Sparxxx:

"Let these cats amuse you with comical depictions, but where I'm from being broke is no honorable affliction."

I always liked that Everclear song:

I hate those people who love to tell you
Money is the root of all that kills
They have never been poor
They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas
