Things you just don't get - Page 421

Eh. I have close to 600, but facebook is pretty good about filtering stuff.

I don't see a peep from most the 500 people I would have trouble picking out on the street...so its not even worth trying to go clean them out.

I don't begrudge anyone with hundreds of acquaintances. That is entirely possible for anyone. A friend is, or should be something more than an acquaintance. To me, an acquaintance is a 'hi, how are you, and bye' dynamic. It is possible for acuaintances to become friends but not for friends to become acquaintances. Maybe I am wrong on that or maybe my expectations of people are too high? I see a friendship as requiring more effort and it would be impossible to sustain meaningful friendships with 500 people, unless I was super-rich and had all the time in the world to offer.

Oh, if that is what a friend is, then I have none.

Very deep, but to my understanding Facebook doesn't offer an "acquaint" function.

Having friends is an overrated concept.

I remember when Facebook was only for the Ivy League schools plus a few select others. It was pretty cool back then.

I agree because I wasn't a part of it. frown.gifshog[1].gif

I remember when "the Internet" for the masses meant AOL but for the few it was all about IRC, telnet, and ftp. It was really cool back then.

Actually, I remember the time before AOL and you would direct dial into a BBS.

it was way easy to stalk people back then since nobody put any security stuff on since no 50's something molester was going to snoop your photos, and hobbies, and location, and telephone #, etc. Nobody cared about being stalked by a classmate.

then the filipinos got hold of it.

its what happened to friendster too. and a certain island of people and the entirety of its population (around 90,000,000 and their far far reaching friends and families spread over the different continents) got hold of it and friendster ended up going under. i actually miss friendster - you could creep so well on that sight.

which brings me to something I don't get: why post more than 5 pictures of a specific event on Facebook? I have female friends that uploaded hundreds of pictures of their wedding or a vacation. I only look at what shows up on the front page anyway - hell if I'm actually going to click and look through an album.

1. Easier than picking just a few? And for an event like a wedding, there might be different pictures that would be of interest to different people.
2. Some people seem to use it as their primary photo album/storage/sharing mechanism.
3. I think a fair number of people actually do click through and look at the entire album, including grandparents and stalkers.

I had the wrong friends.

Also, photos didn't become big until pretty much every real school had facebook...so unless you were talking about people's profile pic or ascii art on the shared-by-everybody wall post...there wasn't much room for nudity back then.
