Things you just don't get - Page 405

Interesting, because IME the door close button always works. You don't have to use it because yes, if you do nothing the door will eventually close and you're on your way...but if you want it to go faster, hit the button

Don't get - why Gandalf had to wait to fight the Balrog when all he was gonna do was destroy the bridge anyway. How about running across, destroying the bridge behind you, and be on your way?

Huh, apparently this came up on reddit just today:
http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1cloed/til_that_in_most_elevators_the_closedoor_button/

People who say they are elevator techs on there are now claiming it works, but there are citations to other techs that say it does nothing when the car is not in firefighter mode. My guess is that the truth is somewhere in the middle...some of the buttons do nothing (or take so long to activate that its like they do nothing) in normal operation while others are very functional.

The most convincing thing I've seen on there is that it works once someone has broken the plane of the optical sensors...the elevator knows that someone has come or gone and thus thinks it is ok to let you close the door early.

I work for an elevator company. The door close button can close the doors quicker or not, depending on how the customer wants it. The most important purpose of the door close button is for when it's placed on independent service, which is the setting used for things like move-ins, etc. On independent service the doors will remain open until the door close button is held in, therefore giving you time to move everything in without having to worry about someone else calling the elevator.

I'll press the door close button on every elevator ride I take for the next month and report back

I tried it a bunch more times today.

Didn't do anything in my building. Might have done something where I was getting lunch.

Now I'm 1 Yes, 1 No, 1 Maybe.

This morning I was making a right turn at an intersection. I swear to God, a person making a left turn onto the street I was turning off from came very close to hitting me. I've griped about this before, but why the hell can't people make a left turn at a roughly 90 degree angle? Is it really that difficult? Do they really need that two seconds they're saving by cutting the turn short?

Try holding down the button. On some it's a time-sensor thing.

lol.. was watching the two towers on hbo last night, and I was wondering why gandalf had to wait for daybreak to show up with the cavalry- therefore letting countless of men and elves, those he calls his friends and allies, be mercilessly cut down- something which he also knows more than the others, witnessing how the bad guys were cloned and all...

alas, it is never that fast. the morbidly obese are capable of surprising bursts of speed when they are faced with the opportunity to be lazy

This is funny.

Same is true for any non-athletic/age restricted/normally stable person when presented with something free.

This is less problematic than the question about the bridge. In this instance I've always assumed that he meant, "I'll be back with reinforcements as quickly as I can manage, which will be at daybreak on such and such a day," and not, "I'll loiter around until I can make a dramatic entrance with the sun at my back. Try to survive until then."

^ yah, but for someone who has a horse that can "show the meaning of haste" he seemed to have taken a sweeter time than the ents in showing up to the fight
