the weather channel: what does the chance of % mean? I don't get it.

Sure, it sounds easy on paper, but I've noticed it's not truly indicative of a % chance of something happening. I offer this example from last night:


ok, 80% chance of rain. So it's most likely to rain, some areas might be in the other 20% and saved. And then look at the map. Who the hell is in that 20%???

"XX% chance of rain" doesn't mean what you think it means.

When they give a percentage chance of rain, it's the probability that rain will occur, not the amount of coverage area that will receive rain. So, for example, if the Weather Channel says there's an 80% chance of rain, that means that there's an 80% likelihood that it will rain somewhere in the area covered by the forecast.

yeah, I didn't think it meant 80% coverage, looking back the way I worded it was weird. My point was how on earth was that map indicative of just 80%?? Who looked at the map and thought "welllll ... there's a chance that it might not, so lets just say 80%"?

no, god damn it. I'm inquiring because way too often I find the "chance of %" to be WAY off, and therefore something that I don't get despite the simplicity of it.

Yeah, it is probability. 80 out of 100 days with similar conditions produced precipitation.

Is 1:58am when you got home last night?

ok, this makes more sense and likely explains it. I see that big wall of green stretching for hundreds of miles and think "of course it's going to fucking rain, look at that". But if looking at similar condition from the past, I can see the 80.

yeah, I got a note from a friend who was at a bar near my place so I joined and had a beer to sober up. Those martinis hit me hard last night, and I was confused as to why. Then I remembered, ah, I took a double dose of Robitussin and met Manton for a few cocktails before showing up. I've made better decisions, not that I'll learn.

I always enjoy seeing "0% chance of rain" when it is currently raining.

Almost time to do it all again tonight, baby. My lady isn't getting home until after 9. I'll make sure I drink at least a bottle of wine and dispose of it before she gets home.

But wait, the next time those conditions exist it will say 1% chance of rain!
