The Mayas and the end of the world.

I can't believe what I heard today. My mom had a meeting yesterday and told me that there were a bunch of guys that they were terrified by the idea of the end of the world predicted by the Mayan's. They were telling her, that a lot of people is buying tickets to come to Mexico, Mérida and some parts of Mexico becuase they think that there is more energy and they can be saved from the Mayan end.

C'mon! You need to be aware that the Mayan's used a calendar systme called "Cuenta Larga" it would be like "Long Count". Which ends after 144,000 years, if I don't remember bad. So basically what this states is that the counting ends and a new one starts. It is like in year 1999, there is no other number to go than 2000. As simple as that. And oh yeah, the date it's not december 21 it is december the 23th.

It's in a magazine from Mexico called "Alagarabía", they don't have the complete article in their web and it is in spanish. Sorry!

But I will try to explain it to you and you can still troll them. Everybody thinks, as I said, that the doomsday is december 21 and it's not, it's december 23th. Te Mayan calendar starts with 0.0.0.0.0 which is the first day of the Baktún, in our calendar it is August 3th, 3114 b.C..

Now the last day of the Baktún is described by the Mayans as 12.19.19.17.16 which is december 22th, 2012. At december 23, 2012, the counting of the calendar goes 13.0.0.0.0 and that's why it starts again. As simple as that.

With this info you can twist a very cool stroy and troll a lot of people... you might even invent a new religion, saying that if they pray to certain God the world would be saved and since nothing will happen, they will thought that they are saved and BAM! You're in your way to be rich! Hahaha!

I can't tolerate these people. On more than one occassion I've had to blow right past them on their right to ensure I don't get squished from the guy behind me if I were to stop short.

Also, motherfuckers who don't make a right on red. This is Pennsylvania, asshole. Stop, look, GO.

Yes, that, but also....why in the crap do we think the Mayans had any insight into the end of the world?

Oh, yes that's a whole new story. I don't remmeber the name of the guy, let me get to my house and I will check the article, but if my mind doesn't fail me, an American was studying the Mayan culture, he didn't understand the way locals understand the language. I didn't make myself clear, I think, but it's basically a bad translation and a misunderstanding of the symbols. This guy wrote that the Mayans in their calendar predicted the end (this was around the 70's) and the euphoria started since then. But as I explained before it's not other thing than the start of  new count.

I read an article about this a few weeks ago that said the Mayans didn't count leap years. So if it was an end of the world prediction it would have happened several months (I think) ago.

It's funny to me how the refutations of the doomsday predictions always revolve around pointing out the flaws in the prediction, not the basic point of "None of these predictions mean shit regardless of their methodology."

If only people were required to take a course in basic epistemology! But alas.

God parents - at least as it's practiced in our extended family - are a couple who are picked due to their faith and character. The parents are responsible for all tasks re: upbringing within the church, but God parents are an auxiliary who are a resource for both parent and child in terms of the church's teachings. Maybe you don't fully understand a religious precept, or parent and child are disagreeing over something and you don't want to call the preacher. Or the child wants to talk something over but not with mom or dad.

However, in practice the responsibility varies widely. For some it's an honorary title, and for others I believe there's an expectation that you'll adopt the child should the parents pass on before the children reach adulthood - or at least bear the burden of keeping them linked to the church.

FWIW, I don't remember who my god parents are.

I don't remember why, I will check the article, but yeah, they didn't count some differences in the years, that's why it is not december 21st but december 23th, but definitely not before that date. biggrin.gif
