Things you just don't get - Page 313

I have a professor who does basically the same; however, I always find myself making the same stupid grammatical mistakes. I'm just going to chalk that up to being so god damn tired all the fucking time.

That's what frustrates me as a professor: I correct the same error over and over, and the student keeps making it. But really it's not that hard to understand. When I play tennis, for example, I make the same damn mistakes over and over. If you're not very, very vigilant about correcting bad habits, you'll fall back into them. It's just that really good students, who've had lots of opportunities earlier in their educations, don't have those bad habits in the first place.

They are relatively minor mistakes such as using due to, and hyphening errors such as writing line by line instead of line-by-line. Although he has made an extensive 60 page grammar guide, many of these 'rules' have never crossed my mind before, and they are relatively easy to pass by, especially given how much work I've had as of late.

I am okay with a B in this class; at least I have learned something.

Is this for an English class? If not, that sounds like way too much to me. Priorities.

Buy him a copy of Strunk & White and tell him to chill the fuck down.

This is a Political Science course, and yes, in a sense, the rules are tedious; however, this has made me a more mindful writer, which isn't a terrible thing. I've had two other classes with the same professor, but never one that was writing based. He is the most intellectual and insightful man I've met, and in many ways, it is a refreshing to have my work so thoroughly critiqued.

So what are you supposed to say instead of "due to"?

Yup, 1/8" on the sides, 1/4" on top for me. I used to go to a barbershop and just get it done there, but then I realized that the cut I had was so ridiculously simple I could just do it myself. It suits my cheapness, and it's a perfectly acceptable and classic haircut.

Yup. Hyphenation isn't set in stone, and "due to" is perfectly acceptable usage. Your professor is a pedantic ass who conflates his style preferences with grammatical rules- English is a remarkably unstructured language, and people who insist on that many rules are entirely full of shit. Roll your eyes and suck it up for the one course, but don't let it restrain your writing in the future.

Yeah, "due to" is perfectly acceptable. It sounds like the professor is imposing his personal preferences.

I've recently been buying organic pre-washed salad mix, which I used to believe was overpriced, but holy shit it's so convenient. Washing lettuce is fucking bullshit. I can't imagine why somebody would take it upon themselves to do that shit any more after buying the pre-washed shit. The chopping, the spinning (so ghey!), the weird leftover varieties in inconvenient ratios that take up valuable fridge space..... fuck that.

I've got a list of usage errors for which I hold my students responsible. It includes what I think are the errors that no one with a university degree should ever make. There are lots of other errors I don't penalize them for, but of course I correct them when I see them.
I try to convey to my students that they are always making an impression, and that they should be conscious of that. Of course a large part of the impression they make comes from the ways they express themselves. I don't teach at an elite university, and so most of my students did not grow up in environments where they could absorb correct English. That's why I emphasize the importance of correct English in my classes: I think I'd be doing them a real disservice if I did not help them address that deficiency. Of course there's only so much I can do, as I am not an English professor and can't devote the whole class to English usage. But I do what I can
.

The analogy is not perfect, but I think of teaching as very much like coaching. My job is to get the best out of the students in my classes. Everything I do pedagogically should serve that goal, and not the goal of impressing on them how smart I am or of fueling my burning sense of righteous indignation at how stupid and lazy kids are nowadays. For reasons somewhat out of their control (and somewhat in their control too, to be honest), they lack a lot of the capacities and dispositions I'd like them to have. But if I'm not willing to meet them where they are and try to help them improve, then I have no business in the teaching profession.
Steve Smith, I've got my list of usage errors in a Word document, which I think I should be able to send in a PM.

WUSL students are lucky to have you.

That's because they're not generally-applicable rules and if your prof treats them as such then he's a pedantic fool.

Listening to recordings of 911 calls on the news. What are people thinking? "Oooh, I wanna hear the woman's mother beg her daughter not to die after the famous football player shot her a bunch of times!!!"
