Even with miles from work travel, $100k/year doesn't go that far when you're paying $2k/month in rent and doing dinner/drinks 3-4 times a week in an expensive city.

I don't dine out that much, but the drinking kills me. It's hard for me to leave a bar with a bill under $30. I've done pretty well saving money on vacations this year -- piggybacked mini-vacations on to work trips (San Juan, Miami).

We've been pulling back a bit in a number of ways and the cash on hand left at the end of every two week pay cycle is eye opening. Let's just say we're "padding our savings" if ya know what I mean.

I can't even get crappy fast food for less than $20 anymore.
I think your last sentence is true (and I agree with both you and Piob that there is a balance there). I certainly have my indulgences. I'm not saying we should all live like misers, but there are people out there whose spending I just cannot get my head around (like the $50k/$35k people BC mentioned). In those cases, I have to believe there's some very poor decision making going on.
D.C. is insane. My brother lives up there, and I'm consistently amazed at how much his family pays for things. I know they may way more than we do, but you'd never know it based upon standard of living.

I did not read 1500 pages of this.   But sure, DC is expensive.

I pay 780 a month for a 3 level townhouse.  My daughter has two bedrooms.

We go to south of the border (SC) and get $400 in fireworks (set off on 1 day

surprised cops did not come).

We go to Florida 20 plus days a year living large.

I probably do not have the right shoes or watch for this forum.

But we live large.  Really large.

You pay $780 for a townhouse in DC?  Have you had it for 30 years?

The eight other guys who live with him and his daughter also pay $780, each.

Oddly enough, just last night I thought i heard my cats knocking things over but it turned out some assholes were setting off fireworks in the field next to my place.

It ain't right to put your cats to condition of blang when they didn't even do nothing were probably being good kitties at the time. Just seems like everone want to down-a-grade cats in nowaday society.
