Things you just don't get - Page 1512

Why does it seem pro-NRA people always have a special orgasm over a pro-gun meme featuring a black person?

Baffles the mind that someone could freak out over how expensive Allen Edmonds are ($350 shoes... the horror!), yet have a nearly 4-figure car payment on a convertible that gets driven less than half the year.

Similarly, people be like "Hey it is bullshit they expect me to come in to the workplace wearing office pants and dreshews look not everone is part of the upper crest of society you know!!!" But they are wearing the newest Air Jordans.

i think the objection might be price for quality? AEs are shite and i wouldn't wear em if you paid me.

then again, i wouldn't drive a european car if you paid me.

^ probably

AEs seconds are a good price/quality ratio, but you can get much better shoes for the price of the firsts

It was definitely a "who would spend $350 on shoes?" type thing.

Agree with Veen, people I work with would be shocked to learn of $300+ dress shoes.  They couldn't evaluate a quality shoe.

It has little to do with quality and all the matter of what most people perceive as relatively expensive. I think someone mentioned on an old post over at the furniture thread, that a home buyer bought a several million dollar house, but couldn't justify paying for an authentic Eames lounge chair or something else.

lol you're right, people undervalue personal property and overvalue real property!

on the other hand i once did some finish carpentry in a new house on top of a ridge in the california riviera, they started furnishing it (and actually living there) while we were wrapping up, there were like 6 eames lounges in the library. ridiculous but nice and it actually all went together and was natural and comfortable (including the trophy wife lol!)

but yeah i think i've spent too much time the thrift thread, it's completely warped my sense of value. fwiw i think AEs were probably higher quality when they were a local business, they've been bought/sold i think at least twice in the last 15 years or so and now you look in em and it says "made in US of imported materials" etc. for my money it's Alden or bust.

Its stupid, because dress shoes can be re-soled and last 10-15 years, while those $150 Nikes only last 1 year, but that 'makes sense' to them.

hardcore sneaks collectors will actually buy donor shoes for the midsoles (or outsoles, i can't remember) and surgically replace em.

SW&D that shit

My singling out of AE distorted the point. The guy who said this was UMC, not rich. I don't care how you spend your money, but if I wanted to, I could buy a pair of Lobbs every other month for the amount he's paying for his convertible (which is a toy, not a daily driver), and that's not even considering insurance and maintenance costs.

i still don't get it tho. why pay for Lobbs when you can drive a Maserati in crocs?

We all have our own fetishes.
