I'm about to go to war with my HOA because the board has failed to enforce even the most basic CC&Rs for the past decade, including stuff like basketball courts. Our neighborhood is nice and quiet, for the most part, but it bugs me that I'm paying dues to a board that literally provides no value whatsoever.

Get yourself an attorney in this area (if you're not an attorney yourself which I think you might be?) as they'll give you some mealy mouth shit from their attorney so they don't have to do anything. In my old house the neighbors behind us did something really annoying and purely against the HOA CC&Rs. When I bitched they had their attorney send me a letter saying why they were allowing it. Thankfully I'm close friends with one of the city's best construction and real estate attorneys and he spent 15 minutes ripping them a new arsehole of they'd have done nothing.

My new place is great.

I am an attorney. I am not normally a litigator, but I've already fired an opening salvo and the response from the board's attorney was so pathetic it literally made me laugh out loud. I don't have any interest in getting in a fight with my neighbors, but I am definitely looking forward to holding the board's feet to the fire and driving a wedge between the board and their incompetent counsel. If things go according to plan the board will fire and maybe sue the attorney for gross incompetence/malpractice.

Not intended as a diversion. I don't know why he can still suck after thousands of hours of practice, other than some innate lack of talent. I still admire his willingness to keep going, despite being terrible. Lots of people give up on things they enjoy because they aren't good. This is keeping him healthy and happy and doesn't harm anyone, so I applaud his love of and devotion to basketball.

Some of this is because I, too, suck horribly at basketball, but I got frustrated and stopped playing. I wish I'd stuck with it, even if I'd never improved any.

If you never improved, then you could go back to it today and still be right where you left off.

I was terrible at basketball and never particularly enjoyed it, so I stopped playing by the time I was about 14. On the other hand, I took up distance running at 27 and still enjoy it even though by most people's standards I'm a plodding rhinoceros.

The kid is horrible. Can't dribble, his shots never go in, he's always slow to react when playing against other kids (he's not a fat or slow kid by any means). How can someone be that dedicated to something for that many years and never get any better?

is he me

my shooting has gotten a lot better but somehow in games i mostly do floaters

I thought about videotaping him and sending it for your free throw form analysis. But there's probably all kinds of laws about surreptitiously videotaping minors

Hey, Shaq must have shot thousand of free-trows over his entire career and never improved one bit -- maybe this kid is just utterly dominant in other aspects of the game. Kidding of course...

He's likely not practicing right.  He could just be unathletic, but a lot of people just think it is about practicing, and people read Malcolm Gladwell who says "just practice 10,000 hours and you'll be an expert" except Gladwell is an idiot.

I mean, if you sat around every day practicing multiplication, but didn't check the right answers or figure out how you got the wrong answer, you won't get any better at multiplication either.

LOL I'm okay with that. I like having control of my own schedule.

This was me. I loved shooting hoops, but when it came to actually playing the game I was useless.

maybe it's some kind of meditative practicum? like maybe the kid has this genius wisdom of mindfulness and it's really not about the result at all, it's about perfecting the act of shooting without worrying about the result. i bet he's a cool customer.
