Hockey I can get, its soccer (or football for you euros) that I dont get. It just painfully slow hockey on a big field.

I don't partake of doobage but one time I watched a soccer match blazed out of my mind... not only did it make sense it was rather beautiful

Was it an NHL game or a lower league? The lower leagues tend to be the ones where all of the nasty fights break out and they attract a lot of trash (both on the ice and in the stands).

I got into an internet argument about hockey just the other day...made a comment about how I don't care for the fighting and I think the sport would have a wider appeal and a better image if they did away with it (just like they have at college, in the olympics, and in the European pros). Not even saying I have a problem with the aggression and contact during the game...but that punching a dude in the face when the puck isn't even in play is absurd.

Of course the fighting fans came out of the woodwork to pile onto me about how important fighting is to the sport (then why does it work without fighting everywhere else) and to even make the argument that the fighting is actually an example of "good sportsmanship".

I think the game itself is actually quite elegant and beautiful. The players are all quite graceful and I think it has a very good set of rules that discourage a lot of the stupid or boring, but strategically sound, tactics that happen in other sports. None of the intentional fouling and free throws from the end of a basketball game and without the excessive time management of the end of a football game. And with walls and icing rules, defenders can't just blindly clear the puck like you can in a soccer game.

It was an NHL game.  It wasn't bad, it just wasn't something I'd go spend $30 or $50/person.  It was a close game and fairly enjoyable.  Just a lot of douche bag fans doing standard douche bag fan stuff.

I don't think hockey should be a 100% fight free sport but there have been eras where the fighting was OTT. I think it's worthy to note that the greatest player ever was in maybe two or three fights in his entire career.

didn't gretsky have goon teammates whose sole purpose was to protect him and proxy his fights for him?

back in the day the nba featured much more extracurricular activity as well.

given all the rule changes to protect nba, nfl, mlb stars and pad scoring stats you could argue that canadians are simply a rougher, tougher society than americans at this point. who needs scoring when you've got fistfights on ice, eh?

I don't follow hockey much anymore, in fact much in the last 20 years, but I can tell you the rule change back in 05, and then placing a current modern day tough guy (Shanny) in charge of league discipline has really had an impact. I would go so far as to say that the day of the enforcer has pretty much passed.

To Gretsky, yeah, he had some of the best enforcers ever to guard him. McSorley, Brown, and then the greatest enforcer ever, Semenko (that guy was scary). The point though is that great hockey can be played without hitting people.

Conversation via text:

Person: You got to check your N.B.
Me: What is N.B? Normally that is "Nota bene" but that don't make sense in context.
Person: Just say the names of the letters you'll get the meaning then. You got envy to you must needs check it.
Me: envy is pronounced "envy," as suggested by the letters that spell it out. Not enbee.
Person: Trying to lash out at me now b-cuz you got N.B. to you news flash it ain't gonna work.
Me: You are acting like a B.T. in this conversation.
