If your kid is a good person, respectable, has a job, does well in school at this point in their life I think that is all that is asked of them and they deserve a nice car if dad (or mom) has the means. Giving an expensive vehicle to a dickhead is something else entirely.
That's actually not a bad idea most never drivers can't drive and a golf is a good car for new drivers (no matter what the insurance says) for one he will learn to drive before being let loose in 2ton 400hp gunship of a car and parking a 5 meter long car isn't very easy, so let them practice before driving something more difficult.
