Does the job, "stockbroker" exist anymore?

Yes, although the terms "registered rep" and "financial advisor" are probably used more commonly now. They are probably less prominent and visible now because so many people now direct their own investments in the market. But there are still plenty of folks doing that job, or some semblance of it.

Firms register with the SEC as "brokers" or, more commonly, "broker/dealers". (From a regulatory standpoint, dealers are authorized to trade on their own account, while brokers trade on behalf of someone else.)

By what I mean, is a guy who is picking stocks for individuals and making a fixed $ per trade, or some sort of spread. I mean, financial planners usually take a more portfolio approach for investments, other than just buying and selling stocks on behalf of somebody.

Yes, that goes on. I think there are various levels of professionalism and integrity among financial planners (as is true of any profession), and some are definitely making per-transaction money.

There are also lots of bucket shops and the like that make their money pushing stocks in a fashion that would remind you of Glengarry, Glen Ross.
