well I'll be damned. you're right there are automated USPS priority/express mail machines and drop off bins.
honestly I've never seen them, all i remember from my experiences in midtown manhattan and brooklyn is this:
^yup you have to do your transactions through plexiglass windows, even the packages you drop off you have to coordinate with the postal worker and put it in a plexiglass box and have your side closed before he/she can open her side (vice versa).
I'd be surprised if I go a little upstate and see actual post office workers without the plexiglass.
but even here in connecticut I haven't seen those automated machines and drop bins. they'd be super useful because standing in line (especially if you've prepaid postage) fucking sucks.
another thing I've only heard about but never seen or tried is the automated immigration kiosks in JFK. apparently they have these immigration kiosks at the point of entry where you just scan your passport and a few touch screen options and you're done. I picked someone up last friday coming in from Korea (terminal 1) and he told me about how there was no lines (even with two full flights coming in simultaneously) because the automated immigration kiosks were so efficient.
