DVD movie ripping / burning software????

3 or 4 years ago I ripped/burned about 200 movies using some software I downloaded but I have no idea what it was.... I think it was two different programs, one like scanned the DVD to break some code then the other ripped into a format that could be burned to a blank DVD....

Anyway there are a number of new DVD's I would like to copy but I have no idea what software to download or how to get started, any suggestions????

Depends on what format you want to rip to ....

I use DVD Shrink to rip DVDs to ISO format. I like this better than ripping to VOBs because it gives you the entire DVD in one file. You can also pick and choose which audio streams to rip; if you want to save space then you only rip the audio stream that you want (e.g. English, not French or Spanish).

I also like DVD Shrink because it allows you to compress DVDs to a certain size. Say you want to rip a 8 GB DVD to fit on a single-sided DVD-R (4.7 GB). DVD Shrink can do that for you. Obviously you will lose quality when you compress, but that's the price you pay.

AFAIK DVD Shrink will not "break code" so you'll have to find something to do that for you ... DVD Shrink works well on unprotected DVDs like my home movies.

I've used Mac the Ripper and Popcorn in the past (Dont know your OS). I have found that its easier to skip the whole burning process and just buy a big enough ExHD.

DVD shrink sounds very familiar I am almost 100% sure that is something I used, but I think it was in combo with another program.....

Both of these are out of date. I'd recommend AnyDVD or DVD43 to strip the movie of it's copy protection and either Handbrake or DVDFab for ripping.

All of those available for free download online? do they all work close to the same, as far as just insert the dvd nad the program pretty much does the rest? I am not all that computer/tech savy, but the program I used to use would copy the dvd to the computer (by breaking any codes), compress it so it would fit on a blank dvd, and then the other one would open and I could burn it to the blank dvd.... ususally worked fine, every now and then I would have to exclude some of the extras to make it fit but quality was always pretty decent.

I used this same combo when I started making backups years ago, but sometimes I found DVD Decrypter didn't work, so I'd use ImgBurn instead of Decrypter, which works well, and the interface is very similiar to Decrypter as well.

DVD43 is free. I believe AnyDVD requires an annual fee, but it's the better program. The new version of AnyDVD can do blu-ray discs.

I don't know what program you're using to burn ISOs to DVDs but I use ImgBurn. It's also free.
