Check out Anchor Steam.

Sierra Nevada IPA comes to mind. Although its been a bit more hit and miss lately...

All the anchors are good... Steam, Liberty, Porter, Old Foghorn are the staples. Stone Arrogant Bastard (and many other Stone brewery beers) are very good as well.

God, I hate all the beers mentioned so, so much. Stick with the microbrews. Somewhere there was a recent article written about a roadtrip a guy took up the CA coast while trying a number of microbreweries.

These are very good http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/beers.htm

I particularly like Old Stock ( a barley wine) and Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. The Prankster Belgian Ale is also very good if you like such things.

These are also very good http://www.mendobrew.com/brews/main_brews.html

I've actually got a bottle of Pranqster downstairs. For some reason they got a distributing contract with North Coast down here in Costa Rica so their beers are available at certain super markets. The Skrimshaw is pretty good for what it is.

just by chance any of those super markets in san jose? i generally prefer the beer produced in costa rica to the beer produced in panama, but any new ones to try would be welcome.

Yup, swing by any Auto Mercado and you'll find quite a few different beers from NC. Of course, you'll also find random stuff like Old Milwaukee and Ice House among the Budweiser and Miller. Off topic but Toña is probably the best beer you can buy down here. It's Nicaraguan and extremely drinkable. Personally, I think Costa Rican beer sucks except for Bavaria. Are you down here now?

REALLY?!?!?!?!?! Snob much? Anchor and Stone are both independently owned and operated craft/micro breweries. If you are really looking for something with a distribution small enough that it doesn't get out of the state, your results will vary widely.

Thats pretty random. I have unexpectedly found Rasputin a few times over the years as far afield as Chicago. If you ever find yourself in the area the brewery is nice and worth a stop, and they run a few varieties on a nitrous tap.

I heard that NorthCoast's Cru d'Or was very good as well. Have yet to try it though. Anchor Liberty is an excellent Bud substitute. I use it as a cherry popper for people who've never had anything other than Coors, Bud, etc..

C'mon. All the Anchor Steam and Sierra Nevada beers have about as much subtly as a XXX show in Amsterdam. Let me guess, does your mouth begin to salivate when you see that Blue Moon is on tap at your local bar? Yeah... No thanks. FWIW, the NoCo brewery mentioned previously, while not as widely distributed as AS or SN, is still fairly available nationally and internationally and happens to be pretty damn good.
