Shouldn't size 40 be the equivalent of US 7?

US Women's sizes are usually US Men's sizes + 1.5.

ie. a 7 Men's would be the equivalent of an 8.5 Women's.

A 39 is generally a 7 in the US, and 40s are either 8s or 7.5s, depending on the maker (usually the former).
