I would say most recs are the same a year later.

A hotel near the Chinatown or Metro Center stops will keep you central to DC, which you want in the heat and humidity of July.

Spy Museum!! Stay away from the Mall, it gets damn hot down there, but you can always duck into the Smithsonian to cool off.

Guys, I have a young family (wife and two little kids, less than 5)

I'm driving.

For me the purpose is to see Chan to have something made. He's staying at the Capital Hilton.

Most convenient for me/family would be to stay at the same hotel, no?

what other recommendations for hotel that's close and decent?

Have not stayed at the Westin in DC, but they have been great when traveling with the little ones.

Nice views of the White House if you get the right room. Ask for a room with a view of LaFayette Park.

Lee, where do you live that you're driving to DC to meet up w/Chan?

The zoo is on the red line, and the Smithsonian museums are on the blue/orange lines, so you will want a hotel with easy access to all these lines. I second the recommendation for somewhere around Metro Center. The Capital Hilton is pretty easy to get to, so there's no need to stay there if you find somewhere better. Check out Trip Advisor to narrow your search.
