Stop it. Whose fault is this?Who did this? Is it you?

Or you?

You, you get a pass, even though you bore me.

But seriously, fucking stop. Cutesy 'hip' pop culture references are a horrible way to develop a character. It makes me want to vomit.

You will never be able to throw on a song and have someone think "wow... this is great, you're very artsy and cool." Can a copout be more superficial? "I'll just use other peoples' coolness and hope people associate that with me because I'm not cool enough." It's the indie equivalent of wearing an ed hardy shirt. Fuck you.

My buddy saw Transformers 2 in IMAX and said it was mostly awesome robot fighting scenes.

Away We Go looks like preciously quirky Dave Eggers/The Believer/McSweeneys cunt-nugget bullshit, yes.

But High Fidelity is entering-middle-age ennui (where the moral lesson is to act like a fucking grown-up instead of spending your life as UO Indie Trash), Juno had potential if they cut out Michael Cera and other forced quirkiness and Nick and Norah's yada yada was really not 'quirky' at all.

I've had a couple of bad reports on (500) Days of Summer, but I think it has promise. It's making fun of Garden State, et al. for the love of God (unless the trailer lies to me completely).

(Basically, Michael Cera is the root of all evil.)

Thought OP would be Magician based on topic title.

It's funny you say this is hipster trash because no hipster indie kids will see it. Besides the fact that everyone I've spoken to think it looks boring as fuck, there's no real indie cred to it. This will pull The Office fans and everyone who loved Garden State. It's going to be a weird demographic for sure, but not the hipster trash.

I liked some of these. Feel good movies make you feel bad?

If you don't enjoy these type of movies, why watch them?

And what does Urban Outfitters have to do with any of this?

Agreed, and why I gave it the pass.

I should probably have put UO Indie in quotations. You know, the very manufactured brand of 'indie,' geared towards a very specific audience, the demographic that you mention. I mean Urban Outfitters hipster in a different way from average joe who likes indie stuff hipster.

I don't watch them. But the trailers somehow find their way into my line of vision and within my range of hearing and manage to offend each of my senses, particularly taste. Urban Outfitters is the Hot Topic of indie, and I'd imagine all the clothing, music, books, and the movies themselves could be found at some of them at some point.

I totally get what the OP is saying. I cant stand this faux-indie twee shit either (except High Fidelity...come on man!) But yeah, Hollywood is making a killing off a certain demographic that prizes itself on being "quirky." I was reading something on MSNBC about how these pandering indie flicks use teams of stylists and trend-spotters just as big as any blockbuster film set to come up with something as try-hard as Juno's hamburger phone. They actually tell Zoe Deschanel and all those boring stars to act more boring and write in lots of aimless monotonous banter into the script to pull in the UO demographic because they think they are watching something "more real."

I'm sorry but clearly this is really to blame. You have only highlighted the symptoms, not the underlying cause.

Oh no, everyone is getting me wrong on High Fidelity! I said it gets a pass, I just think it's a bit boring!

If High Fidelity gets a pass, Kids definitely gets a pass. Kids is just in a completely different league unto its own.

Between this and the recent hype of a shitty local act starting to break (Free Energy), I'm losing my faith in the indie. That probably makes me sound really uncool or stupid or naive, that the indie spot was blown years and years ago or maybe it's flawed to conceive of it as a singular entity, but everything, just everything rock-related is seeming more and more contrived.

Maybe it's my age or life stage, I don't know, but then I always thought I would grow to hate youth/pop culture because I didn't understand it, not because I thought they were doing it wrong.

There is "real indie" out there. Some huge films have been made and acclaimed in the past few years that an ordinary Urban Outfitteer would have never heard of. Looking at my DVD rack I'm lookng at Man on Wire, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Man Push Cart, etc. None of which would hold the split-second attention span of some teeny bop irony-monkey.

Goddamn that was such a great movie. Need to add it to the under appreciated movies list.
