I read a bit more about the python killing the little girl in this morning's paper. It turns out it was not a 12-footer but an 8-footer. This makes clear to me why the snake didn't swallow the little girl after killing her: he was too small.
The whole imagery of this business is so bloody awful: The cute little girl asleep in bed, an image of innocence and purity; the vile serpent silently, stealthily gliding toward her; he seizes her little head with his needle-sharp teeth and throws his powerful coils around her little body; imagine the shock, the terror she must have felt--and she couldn't even cry out loud enough to get help. I only hope her sufferings were short.
