Cheeky.

I, too, plan to pick another nationality's dress in which to become expert. In fact, I have picked it: Canada.

Essays and thought pieces are forthcoming.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Not sure where to go after that. It might be something on Pamela Anderson.

When you speak about good advice being grounded, I take it you are denying that taste exists within subjective circles, and while I would never expect anyone to be able to identify all of them, to deny they exist guarantees failure with mens tailored clothes.

I'm confused. I don't think buttons look silly at all. The advice in the article says so. My point was that it's not clear what they mean by that. Without knowing, I can't see how anybody could take the advice in a meaningful way.

Honestly, 'taste' is a concept I struggle with. On the one hand, it is perfectly sensible to characterize it as something relative to one's circumstances. On the other hand, I don't want to lose the ability to say someone in different circumstances than myself has poor taste--then nobody could judge anybody else's taste, and taste would become a useless concept. I understand the two impulses do not completely defeat each other (you can try to judge another's taste relative to his circumstances), but there is tension nonetheless.

So, all I can say is that the taste of the advice is not apparent to me. It may be that I do not understance the circumstances surrounding it, or that I have poor taste myself. But either way, the article does not put its advice in a sufficiently comprehensive context, so I imagine many rational readers would feel the same as I.

The irony is that it's the English who are better known for loving argument for argument's sake. Scholastically, Americans have been much more pragmatic. Still, nobody loves arguing over nothing more than the French.

What I mean is that you're jumping to conclusions about why someone might not like class-based judgments like those asserted in the article.

I'd be confused. Some people I've met have asked me why I like to dress like an English professor. I'm confused until I take a moment to look at what they're dressed like. Then I feel less confused and more vindicated.

I don't know what you mean about my attraction to clothes being 'democratic'. Fundamentally speaking, I've never put value in democracy. It's often useful for achieving more meaningful ends, and it's often the least-worst option, but I don't value it for itself.

Before you do this, mightn't it be better to get a grip on your own nationality's dress?

I'm sorry, but you already took the best country.

I refuse to take France, so it's Canada for me.
