Morning Person or Night Person??

I have really tried recently to be a morning person in the last couple of months, but it is just not working out for me. I have tried really hard to go to sleep around 11:30 or midnight and wake up at 7:15 or so, but I can't get myself to sleep at that time. My dad is a morning person, but my mom was a total night owl. Is this a genetic thing? I am lucky and can be a night person if I want (can work anytime), so should I stop trying being a morning person? Are their genetics involved here?

I am more a night person physically, but I love the morning. I love the peace of the morning especially dawn. The air is so crisp and the city is not yet awake. Those that are awake are a different breed. More old school and my kind of people. Lot of smiles and greeting. Would love to get a coffee and paper and go for a walk in the morning but I struggled all my life to voluntarily get up that early other than for work or something mandatory.

Your circadian rhythm has a lot to do with genetics. However, there's ways you make yourself wake up a bit earlier.

Light plays a really big role in when your body decides to shut down for the night. Dim the lights earlier and you'll feel drowsy earlier. Try not to look at any bright objects like the TV or computer monitor. If you must, turn down the brightness on the monitors. Dim the room lights. You'll be surprised how much more quickly you get drowsy.

Also, open your blinds or curtains so that the sun wakes you up. I've been taking Vitamin D supps lately and I seem to be a little more sensitive to light waking me up in the morning. Maybe it's just getting brighter but it's really noticeable.

I've always been a night owl, I will always be a night owl. Even as a kid I remember watching Johnny Carson's monologue before going to sleep to go to kindergarten in the morning.

A friend of mine says this helps him get up in the morning.

I am more of a morning person but I could easily adjust seeing that I work in night shifts.

I've always been a night person. I'm miserable in the mornings and have never really been able to adjust to waking up early. I had to wake up at 6am for high school, rowed in college so I had to be up before 5am, and now I need to be to work at 630am. You would think after all these years I'd be more adjusted to waking up in the morning, but no luck.

Mods - please add a poll. I'd like to see the statistical distribution of members.

I am a night person. In fact I am often sleepy all day, until about 8 or 9pm when I become wide awake and ready to stay up for another 8 hours. Not sure I can say I concentrate better at night, but I certainly enjoy being up at night more and always prefer to stay up late and get up late, not the opposite.

Morning. Always have been. Cannot sleep past 8 a.m., nearly always up by six - even on weekends. Frequently up around four.

Bedtime is around 10:30-11, and I'm frequently dragging by then.

I'm pretty equally both. I have no problem staying out all night, and I have no problem waking up early. As long as I'm not doing multiple days in a row where it's out all night and then up early for the day, I can handle either pretty well.

Morning - I feel like if I sleep past 9, I'm waisting the day away sleeping.

I'm becoming more and more of a morning person as I get older. Back in high school and undergrad I could easily sleep until noon or later and would stay up until 4 in the morning pretty regularly, but now I have trouble sleeping past 8am. I normally go to bed now around 11-12ish if that helps at all.
