Essentially they will give you the lower price (either coupon *or* the sales price, but will not combine sales items with coupons. I understand the policy (at 50% off from already very reasonable retail prices, margins are really low), but that doesn't make me wish it were otherwise (being both cheap and poor.)

Does this mean they will give you the lower price from these two options:
1. The sale price as marked on the page
2. The discount price from the original price
So, if the sale price is lower than what you would get with the coupon, they don't apply the coupon. If the price of the item discounted from the original price with the code is lower than the sale price, they will allow you to use the coupon.
Is that right? If it is, I think they're still saying that you both can and cannot apply coupons to sale items. ?!?!
BTW, I'm not exactly a new member. I've been registered for a few months, but my account was lost in the crash.
