I just moved near Avenue A... where to go?

Ok... so I just moved over near Avenue A (and Houston) and want to know some good places to go in the area. I typically never venture East of Bowery, so this will be a new experience for me.

Basically, I am looking for suggestions for ;

1. a place to get a cappuccino
2. a place to sit and read the Sunday Times and have brunch
3. a few good bars to hang out at
4. some good and casual restaurants (maybe entrees in the 15-20$ price range)
5. anything else that you might find notable
6. place to get Falafel and Hummus

Thank you

My favorite San Francisco-style Mexican food is on Avenue A at 6th Street. Good, big burritos, salsa fresca (not that jarred pureed crap, although they have that too) and decent margaritas.

If you have vegetarian/vegan friends (or even one's who aren't), Kate's Joint on Avenue B at E 4th has a really good brunch. It's also a halfway decent bar, kind of funky.

i know it's gimmicky, but i like please don't tell, and the hot dog shop it's connected to. not super close to where you moved but an easy walk.

1. Ninth Street Espresso (also hit Abraco for espresso though it is really standing room only)
2. Not sure, though would be interested to hear what others think
3. There are a million, a few I like:
-Spitzers
-Terrior
-Marshall Stack
-St. Dymphnums
-Inoteca (wine)
-Peasant Wine Bar (downstairs)
-Sorella (wine)
-10 Degrees
-Macondo
-The list goes on.....
4. Again, there is a ton: Max, Una Napoletena, Itzocan, Kasadela, Lil Frankie's, Supper, Mercadito, Momofuku Noodle Bar, Porchetta
6. The Hummus Place

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I have never been to any of these places. Will check them out.

Is weird to be living in the "Alphabet City" area. When I was a kid this neighborhood was somewhat scary. Now it is pretty nice.

Twelve years ago there were open drug sales on the streets. Isn't Katz's deli at Houston and First? [Googled it; close enough.] The last time I was in NY (2004) I wandered around the Village looking for Jones Diner, which I remembered fondly from the nineties. I never found it and thought I was losing my mind (or at least my sense of direction), but when I got back to my friend's place I looked it up on the internet and found that it had closed.
