Zydeco (French: "les haricots" or "le zaricot", English: "green beans") is a form of American roots or folk music. It evolved in southwest Louisiana in the early 20th century from forms of Louisiana Creole music. The rural black Creoles of southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas still sing in Creole French.

Usually fast tempo and dominated by the button or piano accordion and a form of a washboard known as a "rub-board," "scrub-board," or frottoir, zydeco music was originally created at house dances, where families and friends gathered for socializing.

Sometimes the music moved to the Catholic church community center, as Creoles were mostly Catholic. Later it moved to rural dance halls and nightclubs. As a result, the music integrated waltzes, shuffles, two-steps, blues, rock and roll, and most dance music forms of the era. Today, the tradition of change and evolution in the music continues. It stays current while integrating even more genres such as R&B, soul, brass band, reggae, urban hip-hop, ska, rock, Afro-Caribbean and other styles, in addition to the traditional forms.

The new stuff that has a hip hop twist is great.

Anyone know any great Zydeco joints in Nola?

I'm a fan. When I was still in LA I'd go down to the annual festival in Long Beach. Great music, great food, great atmosphere. I can't say I'm on board with the hip-hop remixes. Talk about a butcher job.

Never heard the zydeco-hiphop-hybrid, but the real stuff is pretty darn good. Beausoleil for straightup Cajun; Buckwheat Zydeco, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha-Chas, CJ Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, the Eunice Playboys, etc.

I'm sure there is somewhere to listen in Nawlins, but the real deal is out in the Bayou!

Mid City Lanes Rock n' Bowl had zydeco 'battle of the bands' which was pretty sweet. Bowling till 9 or so then it turns into a small club w/ full bar. But that was during jazz fest in the mid 90s. so not sure if they're doing it anymore.
