I think the Asian ideal of a broad midsection is more correct though power lifters generally have both I believe the core is where the real strength is at.

I don't really understand what you mean... Chinese olympic lifters look pretty much the same to American olympic lifters... the way powerlifters train pretty much dictates how they look and they have some of the strongest midsections imaginable... you have to if you want to push 800 pound squats and deadlifts. What exactly do you mean?

I am talking traditional values. A Sumo would be the embodiment of the oriental ideal of strength where as the western ideal would be more the Conan the barbarian shape. I was never aware of this and read it in a book on Asian Martial arts. The book was a general overview of a wide variety of martial arts and the history. I am not from Asia so this book could be flawed but it was an interesting perspective none the less.

Good advice. I have heard that asian celebrities like going to California. Unfortunately, I don't plan on being in SE Asia again in a long time.

My wife and I started going to a 24hr gym this month. Php1,250 (roughly US$27) each. It's got around 15 power racks, all the bars are standard olympic 45lbs. The trainer is putting my wife through crossfit-style timed workouts using kettlebells and medicine balls. He set me up with their standard Starting Strength program.

I go to the YMCA down the street and do mostly free weights and benches mixed in with a little machine work.

That's better than the 5000 pesos I spend whenever I get a 1 month pass at Gold's in Glorietta (I go to Phils 2-3 times a year with Makati as my base).

Is that a 24hr fitness? Didn't know they operated in Phils. Even if it isn't, could you ask them how much a month pass would be?

Nope it's not 24hr fitness (AFAIK they're not in the Philippines yet).

I go to a boxing gym. $80 (AUD) a month. Also has a small weights area, not a lot of selection but there's rarely anyone there so I usually can do my workout uninterrupted. No squat rack though . Im considering changing to a more traditional gym since I don't take the boxing classes so much anymore.

Local gym, has everything I need, 5 minute bike ride to and from. Pay $82 every 3 months. Pretty standard stuff.

It's good for people watching. Avoid "gym buddies" at all costs, but OK for light socializing. Having a sauna/whirlpool/steam room is a good excuse to treat yourself, cheaper than a "spa".

Haven't been into an actual gym but plan on doing so in the future. The company I am currently with has a partnership with Gold's Gym and they are giving us huge discounts more than 50%.
