Linux Appreciation Thread - Page 3

I pretty much wanted to make the switch after my first install - the structure of unix operating systems appeals to me. However, the learning curve for 'nix can be pretty steep, and until I had reason to do so, I didn't climb it.

While I really like Linux, I switched because I have need. Other than that, I find the different operating systems pretty interchangable these days.

NP. I now wish there was more to say on the topic... and so a google search reveals! Apparently wikipedia has a page about "Lightweight Linux Distributions." That should really get you going.

While not in the same league as the DSL and Puppy varietals, imma take it upon myself to give another rec for Elementary.

I've messed around with Lubuntu and Xubuntu on a couple of different way-underpowered netbooks, and Elementary is every bit as light and fast and like a thousand times prettier. It does lose some points for stability (it's still in beta), but positives well outweigh the negs on it.

Thread Starter
I need to find my post here several years ago where I predicted that Linux was going to explode in the mobile market and to a somewhat lesser extent, the desktop market, due to continuous Microsoft blunders. I seem to recall everyone responding telling me I was full of shit and that nothing would pull people away from Win OS smile.gif

Enjoy Linux Mint and those Android phones!
