Jaco Pastorius

Thread Starter
Tonight I discovered Jaco while poking around for some mid-80s Rick Danko/Richard Manuel/Garth Hudson bootlegs (Jaco played with them often at the now-defunct Lone Star Cafe in NYC). His basswork is AMAZING. I feel like an idiot not knowing who the guy was.

His playing style was noteworthy for containing intricate solos in the higher register. His innovations also included the use of harmonics[4] and the "singing" quality of his melodies on fretless bass. In 2006, Pastorius was voted "The Greatest Bass Player Who Has Ever Lived" by reader submissions in Bass Guitar magazine.[2] He was inducted into Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only four bassists to be so honored (the others being Charles Mingus, Milt Hinton, and Ray Brown), and the only electric bassist to receive this distinction.
Like many of the greats he died tragically, at a young age (35).

You've never even listened to Weather Report?

He was a great one.
I also enjoyed Stanley Clark when he played with the likes of Jeff Beck.

imo, one of the most overrated musicians, and i'm speaking as someone who likes his solo album.

I feel he is overrated in light of others who were contemporary to him and just as talented.

With that said, I think Portrait of Tracy on his self titled solo album is one of the best executed solo bass recordings ever.

Wow, you just heard of Pastorius?

+1.

Welcome to Jazz 101, Conne. There was actually some pretty good stuff after 1970. Go get his solo album, his birthday album, and most importantly, Weather Report's Black Market and Heavy Weather.

One of the most unpleasant, albeit talented, individuals I've ever met.

Can't be worse than Dizzy Gillespie. That motherfucker is sitting on a hot coal in hell for sure.

Buddy Rich was also legendary for his streak of ball-busting perfectionist temper. He had the talent to get away with treating other musicians like serfs, too, which must have made it doubly unbearable.

Jaco is a legend as much for his showmanship as his playing. That's what really set him apart from his contemporaries.

Didn't Jaco die from complications of being punched in the face for being an incrediby punchable douche? +99 on being an overrated fuck. But his songs are fun to play (someone should let me write a history book)
