Koss Porta Pros for street wear at the moment. Love them. But I was looking for a really good solid one for home use.

For those people with more high-end headphones. Is it even worth it to buy a quality set if all your music is digital?

been using akg for as long as I can remember. Only at home and in the office. Very comfortable and sound great.

Obviously I don't use them walking around. Then I would really look goofy.

I like the X5, more balanced and much better comfort than the C751.

Thanks, I'll check 'em out.

I use them for MP3s, so I'm not getting their full quality, but I am a fan. I just checked them out on a couple websites, and they seemed highly rated for their price point, so I pulled the trigger. I did have my eyes on them for about three years though, so when I saw they hadn't gone away, I knew they had to be OK.

Make sure you insert them properly. Otherwise they don't work at all. So just make sure you get that right if you buy a pair. Also, carry around a bit of tissue or alcohol wipes as I find mine get ear wax on them. I wash the tips after pretty much every use.

I bought mine on eBay.

^^^ I use Ipod (used to have a Creative Labs Nomad Touch), but I mostly have songs at 160-192kbps, some classical at 256...

Anyone know what the sort of "optimal" kbps would be? I can hear the difference between 128 and 160-192 for sure but I'm not quite sure if it's worth going higher then that...

I'm quite pleased with it, although I haven't owned a lot of other amps for comparison purposes. I will say that for the $60, it's an excellent value. The maker is a good guy, too; he repaired it for free when one of the jacks came a little loose. Certainly a nice gesture. EDIT: "Is it even worth it to buy a quality set if all your music is digital?"---I would say yes. Going from $30 Koss headphones to my current setup was a very noticeable improvement for me, and all of my music is in MP3ish formats.

The higher you go the better quality, supposedly. FLAC is prolly the closest you can get to CD quality in digital form, from what I know. I usually get my songs at 192+ and use VBR, just to save some space. So I really don't know if it's worth it to buy such sensitive headphones, since you will be able to hear all the imperfections. Thats the problem I am facing right now.

Bose in-ear headphones, which is far too bass-heavy for what I generally enjoy listening to and I have to crank the equalizer to boost the treble (that's a first). Plus they're not durable at all. Sound quality is crisp and decent but definitely better options exist for the money.

Sennheiser CX300-Bs - Pretty good price/quality ratio for in-ear.

Portable music device - Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen NX. Yeah, it's a huge thing (basically monopolizes a pocket), but it holds 30 gigs, I got it used for $100 5 years ago, and a single battery charge on it with the above headphones lasts me at 8-10 hours. I had to replace the battery once about a year ago, but it's designed to allow you to do that easily.

I actually want this thing to die on me, because I simply can't make myself go out and pay a hefty premium to get a smaller MP3 player.

I use a JVC Alneo, a little Japanese MP3 player with a supposedly nice amp and decent equalizer.

Mine has a neat feature where it plays a sound at a certain frequency with increasing volume. You're meant to click in when you can hear that frequency at what volume. It then goes on to repeat for several frequencies and uses your response to create an equalizer preset for you.

For what are you optimizing? I assume you're going for smaller files so that you can fit more on your device. In that case, the "optimal" kbps is that which produces the smallest files where you cannot tell the difference from the next higher setting. If you can tell the difference between 128 and 160, but (suppose) not between 160 and 192, then 160 is optimal. Or maybe 192 is optimal for you. Listen to your ears, they'll tell you.
