Wimbledon 2009 - Page 24

I'm not a Federer fan but he is so good that he makes it look effortless, much like the greats of any era. What I think would be interesting is for the modern players to try playing with wood and metal racquets just to see how much the game changes. I think we'd probably see a lot more net play and finese come out.

Is Wimbledon the most exciting tennis tourney now? Such great matches the last two years. US Open have been straight set wins for Federer the last two years.

^Hahaha, were you watching the Aussie, Wimbledon and the US from 03-07? There was a time when everyone was playing for 2nd place, and the only real thing you were surprised about was that he somehow made ANOTHER incredible, inhuman shot.

Seriously, every Federer match had a shot that makes you

Multiple shots. I have some recollection of a segment NBC had called "Roger's Funhouse" where they just showed all the reason-defying shots he'd made in the tourney to date and it was consistently just... jaw dropping. There's a good "top 10 best" of Fed on youtube but it's not high enough quality unfortunately. This is up there for my faves, just because of Andy's reaction. Edit: Couple of classic lobs. The backhand flip-lob, The never-before-seen overhead smash-lob. Can't embed, click for idiocy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2uGmZ_E4fYCheck out at :25, the towel boy shaking his head like "I can't fucking believe you just did that."

Man, that was incredibly boring to watch. Everyone always talks about how Borg is underrated as a GOAT. But Lendl has to be up there as well, as he'd achieved great results over a long period of time. I mean, Federer JUST broke his record of GS Finals appearances, right? He was no.1 for 270 weeks, won over 80% of his singles matches in his career, but only went 8-11 in GS Finals (playing against Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Wilander).

The Aussie Open IMO produces some of the best matches in recent memory. This year alone, you had Fed-Nadal and Nadal-Verdasco. Past great matches have included Tsonga-Nadal, Fed-Safin, and a few others I'm blanking on.

But the Men's Finals at Wimbledon has been ridiculous for the past 7-8 years. My favorite of which was Ivanesevic-Rafter.

Yeah, such an amazing shot from far beyond the baseline. He did something similar against Djokovic in the US Open last year, but it was a jumping overhead slice lob from behind the baseline

Not sure if this has been posted in this thread yet (haven't ready all 24 pages), but this is some genius writing explaining Federer's greateness, even if it is a couple of years old: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/20/sp...f=playmagazine

Already posted the djokovic shot, it's the third one above (us commentary)... like I say, I love the towel boy's utter disbelief.

Um, was that Padma that I saw?

Yeah, she is friends with Fed. I like it much better when she is sitting in his box than when Gavin Rossdale is in there.
