Are there certain situations in which you'd commit suicide?

if I was one of forty midgets enclosed in a battle to the death with a lion, I would gladly throw myself at the beast facefirst for the horde.

******* horrible, completely inexplicable, and an awful awful way to do it.

So selfish....

Some hold that suicide is the most selfish act possible.

The 'selfish' argument always seems to be oft-repeated and never explainable or understood. It's the go-to, standardised way of objecting. People aren't puppets or little toys for others to play with, and if a friend treated me as such then I had clearly misjudged our relationship.

I've been turning this whole suicide business over in my head over the last week - conceptually, not considering it - and I'm kind-of-sort-of coming to grips with the reasons behind society's view.

If suicide is correlated with depression, then it betokens a mental illness, right? And does not society have a duty to its members to help one another? Don't we? I don't know.

Why is it, merely because someone might deem it selfish, you feel they are objecting? That's a very interesting value judgment on your part.

This desire, such as say seppuku, could be deemed a selfish desire.

That would be a much better option...runaway to a third world country and create a new identity. Of course, I don't think people attempting/committing suicide are thinking rationally which is why I diagree with:

In most cases, I don't think the one committing suicide is acting in a selfish manner...I think they have simply lost the ability to think rationally and not in the M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening kind of way [note to self: add that to overappreciated movie thread] I was 30 seconds too late when a neighbor killed himself. I took it hard for a little while, not because we were great friends or anything, but because I kept thinking I could have stopped it if I were there. The pain his family still endures must be tremendous.

Oh, don't think this is my position. I just was tossing it out there based off another post. I think suicide is a totally valid action in a free society, **** the motivations.

No, I didn't think that was your opinion...as your statement starts "Some hold..." not "I think..."

Is there another reason for calling it selfish?
