They were kinda dogpiled by hipsters, and as soon as something becomes POPULAR I CAN'T like it anymore! :P

Were good until they sold out. I'm serious, Return to Cookie Mountain sucked horse cock. I still listen to Staring at the Sun a lot.

This thread demands the question, who actually IS the band/group/artist/whatever of the decade. Has any band actually put out two really, really great albums? Arcade Fire had one. The Shins never really repeated. Mars Volta had one. Of Montreal had one (I'm not counting Satanic Panic) and it became irreparably tainted with Hipster. The National, although they haven't really had time to follow up on Boxer. Ratatat had two solid albums, but they don't cut it and it's probably too obscure a choice, and the same goes for RJD2. Portishead isn't accessible enough, same with Sigur Ros who would otherwise be a solid pick in my book. It's actually been a pretty diverse decade for music, in contrast with the 90s, but as far as front runners, it's tough to pick them.

It's not so much the popularity. It's tough to treat a group the same way when the connotations rise to the level of parody. Though it's worse when they do it themselves; read the lyrics for "campus".

I think only time will tell about the "greatest band of the decade". It seems like that sort of thing only is decided on in retrospect. What matters most is who the greatest band influences. So whoever the greatest band of the next decade is most influenced by from this decade. . . That being said, it does seem like there aren't really any "powerhouse" bands that have managed to do well repeatedly. (though Funeral and Neon Bible were both pretty damn good.) Also, Vampire Weekend, really? Really?

Definitive and best are two very different things. I think there's a pretty strong case for Kanye as definitive.

I'm not doubting you, as I'm too old to know, but really? Kanye = definitive?

That's a whole different argument. Kanye lost me when he sampled Daft Punk. Sorry, but it was better WITHOUT your weak rhymes. Stay home gay fish.

I figure the best of the decade has to have some accessibility and a reasonable scale of influence, such that even if they might not be known to all, they're at least not obscure. Within that group, who's put out the best stuff since '00? If Sigur Ros qualifies my vote is for them, but they might still qualify as obscure.

He had huge commercial success, which I can't imagine a definitive artist not having. He also had critical success and decent penetration in to various sub cultures (I mean i'm a huge fucking snob and I love the guy)

For better or worse his fashion sense is a touchstone and he's captured some of the more prominent pop trends (auto-tuned voice et al.)
