Things you used to eat because you THOUGHT they were healthy? - Page 2

I used to eat a lot of soy products and always opted for artificial sweetners. I still buy both, but not nearly as much and not because I think they're the healthier alternative.

Soy is bad for men. Lowers testosterone and give ya bitch tits. I cut back on the protein bars because they tend to use soy more than real protein sources.

Now that I am in late 30's and have to much careful about what I eat lest I become a fat slug I still have eaten things way too much to only find out they weren't all the healthy. Top of my list is Trail Mix - I would by the stuff in the bulk bin (so no labels) and eat as a snack food instead of something "less healthy". One day I looke dit up and found 1 cup of trail mix has 500 -700 calories depending on the blend. Ouch!

The othe that always got me was the Banana - Great for energy, but if your an older guy trying to drop weight not a great fruit to grab for a few times per day.

Errr...bananas are bad?

Similar to trail mix I guess. A large banana is ~60g of sugar. A few of those a day isn't really necessary for a sedentary person.

Bingo - it is the Chocalate bar of the fruit world.

I recall trying to lose 10 lbs and trying to eat lots of fruits and veg and eating 5 or 6 bananas a day, but having no clue that that was kind counter productive.

So by "healthy" you meant "fattening."

1 a day is good enough for bananas. very nutritious, but it should be considered a starch rather than a fruit.

For me at this stage of life - yes. For the question not really.

My definition of 'healthy' is 'nutritious' (meaning it provides your body with a good balance of energy/vitamins/minerals/micronutrients).

Here's stuff that I thought was healthy but is not really healthy at all under that rubric:

wheat bread
pasta
tomato soup
fruit juices (almost all of them)
fruit smoothies
soy milk (in comparison to real milk)
rice
potatoes
lettuce
vegetable oil

Everything other than fresh fruits, veggies, meats and nuts.

Soy.

oh ya I was using soy protein for like two years, gave me major tits.

The only soy protein I eat is roasted edamame and thus far I'm bitch-tits free.

This site says a large banana has 17g of sugar...where did you get 60? That would mean 50% of the banana is sugar...

There are on average about 0.2g of carbs in every gram of a banana. I weigh them every time I eat one so I can calculate my insulin dose (along with everything else). A "large" banana usually runs no more than 40 grams of carbs. So unless I'm missing something, your 60g of sugar is way off.

Here we go...according to Calorie King a large 8" to 8 7/8" long banana (approx 4.8oz or 136g) banana has 31g of carbs of which 16.6g is sugar. An extra large one is 34.7g/18.6g.
