Things you used to eat because you THOUGHT they were healthy?

I think allot of guys pick up healthy eating later in life. In my early 20's I used to eat like shit and still was in great shape. I honestly thought Pizza was good for you .

Now that I am in late 30's and have to much careful about what I eat lest I become a fat slug I still have eaten things way too much to only find out they weren't all the healthy. Top of my list is Trail Mix - I would by the stuff in the bulk bin (so no labels) and eat as a snack food instead of something "less healthy". One day I looke dit up and found 1 cup of trail mix has 500 -700 calories depending on the blend. Ouch!

The othe that always got me was the Banana - Great for energy, but if your an older guy trying to drop weight not a great fruit to grab for a few times per day.

When I was like 12 or 13 I made the comment to my doctor that I've been eating healthier by eating Taco Bell more often.

That was pretty funny.

I get what your saying. But just because trail mix is high in calories doesn't mean it isn't healthy... relatively of course.

Fruit flavored yogurt. Powdered fruit juices (Tang). Granola-nut bars.

Smoothies. Holy crap are those things bad for you! Not all of them, mind you, but you really need to be picky.

Whole milk.

Might still be okay for some...not for me.

Yes if you buring loads of calories it might be okay, if you are pushing 40 and sitting in your car or at desk most of the day, a 600 calorie snack is not a good thing

Well, from what I understand from the studies on dairy and weightloss... you lose the most weight drinking 2% or Whole milk than you do from Skim or 1%. It seems counterintuitive, but it is more filling, thus reducing caloric intake from other foods. I hate whole fat dairy because of the feeling. A glass of Whole milk practically puts me in a coma.

So, I was fascinated by this new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which found that women who regularly eat whole milk or other full-fat dairy products gain 15%-30% less weight over a ten year period than women who choose only low-fat dairy products. Is this good news or what? Brie is now diet food!!

Most scientists have been working under the assumption that it is the calcium in dairy products that has the weight-modulating effects, but this new study makes you wonder. You get just as much calcium from low-fat milk as you do from whole milk--and yet the whole milk seems to prevent weight gain better.

With these big population studies, it's always tricky to know what is actually producing the effect that you're seeing. It could be that people who eat whole milk and cheese end up eating fewer calories overall, because the higher fat content is more satisfying. (I'd buy that.) Whole milk and cheese also contain more of a fatty acid called CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which is being studied as a weight loss aid. Or it could be something much less obvious. Perhaps women who eat more cheese tend to eat less sugar.

Interesting concept....but eating to be healthy and eating to lose weight are two different things.

It helps keep fat off more than helps lose weight though.

If you're healthy, chances are you are working out. If you are, your caloric and micronutrient requirements increase. Fattier milk meets these needs. Additionally, it increases your bone mass as well. A good bone mass for a man is 7%, I'm almost at 9%... if the scale thing is to be believed anyway (it was on sale at Bed, Bath and Beyond).
