U.S. Open at Bethpage Black

A good friend of mine is playing in the U.S. Open at Bethpage. I'm going out there tomorrow for the first round to follow him around the course. Having grown up in Augusta, I go to the Masters most years. This will be my first Open, though. I'm really looking forward to seeing the course and the completely different crowds.

CHIII? I'll be there on Sunday, unfortunately I won't have anyone toting my bag.

Augusta National is proof Georgia is one of the greatest places on Earth.

F*ck Bethpage, I could shoot -4 from the pro tees there.

Yes but every internet denizen worth his salt can shoot -4 from the pro tees there...or anywhere, for that matter.

CHIII didn't qualify this year. He has something like a dozen second place finishes in his career and only two wins. He was supposed to be the next big thing about 10 years ago, but the past five years have been a real disappointment. I'm friendly with Charles. I played with him for my entire childhood, as we were members at the same club as kids and then played at rival high schools. I played with a lot of top juniors back in the day. Nobody came close to Charles. It was clear from when he was 7 years old that he was going to be special. I'm actually following Cortland Lowe III (CLIII?). He's a no-name, who, oddly enough, actually grew-up next door to Charles. He recently quit his job as a club pro to try to make it as a touring pro. He shot a 62 and 68 to win his sectional qualifying and earn an invitation. The 62 was a course record. He's only played one PGA tournament, making the cut at the Buick earlier this year. This will be his first professional major. I've played countless rounds with him since we were kids. This will really be a lot of fun for me to see how far all his hard work has taken him. I'm hoping he makes the cut, so I can get to hang around Bethpage for the weekend.

Awesome! Sounds like a Dan Jenkins novel.

You should have entered the tournament.

-20 for 72 holes would probably win it.

I was there today and got soaked from top to bottom, got to see about 10 minutes worth of golf. 5 of those minutes were of Tiger.

it's probably going to rain Friday too.

I can't believe they're not going to offer some sort of rain check.

They probably will for Sunday

quoted for LOLiness.

what is the line for winning this one? -10? I have no idea but it seems that the USGA really likes a lot of black numbers on the leaderboard. The rains will no doubt soften the greens though.

LOL - Kind of like how Ben Hogan wouldn't play golf on vacation - not even with the King of Norway.
