Hey guys,

Its been a while since I've posed anything on this page.

This years project has been a 1972 Honda CB450. It was a turd when i first bought it, A not running, rusty, muddy mess of a bike.




Over the past year I've rebuilt or replaced EVERYTHING on it. Fully vapor blasted and rebuilt the engine top to bottom. All new black oxide socket cap hardware.



Blasted and powder coated all of the chassis components in satin black.




re-laced the wheels with Buchanan stainless spokes.



I have some mild rear-sets and clip-on installed. These additions give it a nice riding possition; dropping the knees to allow you to pinch the tank.

The bike also has some custom metalwork. I made the rear "Cafe" cowl out of 18ga sheet metal. It was formed with a sand bag followed by some english wheel work. The cowl is made of 4 separate "panels"that were welded together and planished smooth.

I have all the hand controls installed. Front brake caliper installed. Waiting on a stainless brake line. etc

Then a full wiring harness build, paint and leather upholstery.









This is not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy tinkering and bringing these old girls to life.

These are the proposed specs fitting the 405 Indy, but minor aspects have not been detailed yet. The idea is to first gauge interest from the forum as many spots have been filled.
Also, to offer the width selection missing in other Alden GMTO, because many on here have trouble getting wide or narrow boots. So this is their chance.

Maybe we can add a protective titanium toe plate, an extra leather toe patch for the gear shifter, some interior armor and padding, carbon fiber heel protection, plastic toe sliders, higher boot tops for calf protection with a built in shin guard. Instead of shell cordovan we can have it made of high impact plastic. Man, that'll be some sweet ass Aldens!

Dang @blue collar. I'm just not willing (or able due to space and skill constraints) to put that much in to my 1979 kz400.

However, I did just fabricate a new licence plate/turn signal mounting sytem and replace the leaky vacuum petcock with a manual one. That should do it for the necessary repairs before I can sell it with the exception of installing the diode kit to make the signals blink on one side at a time.

I'm about to go try and take it for the first ride of the season...just long enough to make sure it works and warm everything up for an oil change. Wish me luck!

Bike's still not quite there. Something's dripping when it is leaned over. I don't *think* it is coming from the engine itself...I think the fuel leak deposited some gas in places that don't drain on the center stand...but after riding for a few minutes and then putting it on the side stand...there was a LOT of liquid coming out. Not sure how much can fit in the starter motor compartment which is the likely culprit--this seemed like more than would stick in there without draining.

But after I leaned it over extra far and let it drain, it seems to have stopped. A little more was coming out today when I actually rode it, but hopefully it is done. Seems to be running pretty well today with fresh oil and fresh gas...need to fiddle more with the idle setting and it is still popping a bit sometimes when I come off the gas, but it appears to actually be fully rideable.

Two quick pics for @blue collar after I washed it this morning.




Any tips on products for cleaning the bottom side? the whole bottom half of the bike is a greasy oily grungy mess and I mostly just succeeded in smearing it around with my brush. I suspect I need something more aggressive than Dawn. Buy some more simple green? I'm hesitant to start splashing kerosene everywhere.

What was the fluid? Gas or oil?

Smelled gassy...and I did have lose like 2 gallons of gas *somewhere*. I assumed that most of it dripped onto the ground and evaporated.

Oil smelled extra gassy when I changed it too which I wouldn't have expected--I know you can get oil into the crankcase if the carbs flood (although they do have overflow drain tubes), but my leak appeared to be at the petcock and was dripping down onto the top of crankcase, and into the compartment where the starter motor sits. But I believe the starter motor compartment has a drain hole...shouldn't be finding its way into the crank case from there.

Wtf!?

Tried to take the bike out this morning and the clutch is slipping like crazy. Had to turn around and put it back.

Clutch felt fine on Sunday. Used the same oil I always use (Rotella t 15w40), adjusted the clutch to where the travel felt ok... Didn't change anything else and yet now the clutch feels totally shot.

Potentially just need to adjust the clutch pushrod... All is not lost yet!
