Horsehide is rare where I source my materials, they almost never get it, and the scale of the project would need more than they ever have anyway.

You are already on to something and you know it. I'm ready to help you source material, give insight on fit (if I could) or do anything. What you shared is exactly what I have been shopping for since I started riding. Holla!

I ran into a random guy named "Captain Ziggy" while out getting gas on a ride yesterday. He has been riding from Michigan down to Texas and hitting up all types of dive bars and places in between. He seemed like a cool character and even has a website set up with videos of his trip (with the camera facing him for some reason...)

He was like a motorcycling Santa Clause with a touch of foul language.

My favorite quote on the site

You can actually get D3O armor from retail outlets now.

Not sure if it is technically sold as replacement parts but it is online for about the same price as knox armor.

Not quite as protective as knox, but far less bulky so I have considered replacing my elbow and maybe shoulder armor with it.

the D30 stuff is really impressive under the hide. It goes with the curves and stays slim, and if it gives a bit of slide protection, then that's as good as it gets considering how big it is dimensionally. If I continue my motorcycle jacket project I'm sticking with D30 til the next better thing comes along.

Here is an interesting article and video on the d30 armor:

I am considering this for s/s: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/spidi-spidi-rr-wind-pro-leather-suit. From a safety perspective - any reason not to purchase?

^No, Spidi makes good stuff.

I wish us cruiser guys got to wear cool helmets and gear. On the positive side, at least I don't have to shell out 900 dollars.

why not? Wearing a jacket and at least a half-helmet would be smart...

I'm pretty good about wearing my helmet, but I've been going sans jacket because of the ridiculous heat. I'm just saying that it's kind of cool how they get to dress up like a space explorer every time they ride.

That is easily one of the most awful things I have seen that comes on two wheels. The Ducati Diavel is another.
