But I wouldn't consider it entirely strange to wear the platonic idea of a 'perfect' shirt every day.

And plenty of folks/professionals wear the same pair of shoes every single day, until they wear out. I had a boss who had two identical pairs of shoes that he rotated between, and he wasn't really a sartorialist.

This way, you're spreading the wear across five pairs, so they should last more than 5 times longer. And since Alden shell cordos are reputed to last 15-20 years, you should be good for the next century.

With the (probable) diminishing purchasing power of the US dollar, along with the chance that Alden will close it's doors in the next 50-100 years, it sounds like you made a wise investment.

Could I suggest a spreadsheet, individually tracking nicks, wear, polishing, and rebuilding of each shoe?

We need to stop paying attention to this guy. Mafoo seems to thrive on the debate over whether he is stylish or not or at the very least he enjoys the discussion about himself.

When it comes down to it though, Mafoo is not stylish. He makes quirky decisions and obsesses over tiny details which seems to annoy or interest the forumites, but ultimately we should leave him alone with these thoughts. Some of his defenders suggest that the "hate" has to do with jealousy, but this is of course a red herring. Plenty of other wealthy forumites such as Iammatt, Phat Guido, and Vox out spend him and often take fashion risks that might raise eyebrows, but they still manage to look good and to look stylish.

Mafoo on the other hand wears clothes that appear to not fit his body, make him appear stiff and unnatural and fit some bizarre notion of what he thinks ought to look stylish, but ultimately look bizarre on him. I have no real hate for the guy, I am just not buying into the trap any more-- thread upon thread about a couch or 5 pairs of identical shoes? How bland and boring, yet somehow this guy manages to draw people into a debate over his strange decisions where he remains obstinate for page after page under the false pretense of seeking advice.

I don't understand this closemindedness. I wouldn't, in a million years make some of these choices, but I say "let a thousand flowers bloom." Foo's particular flower is the sartorial embodiment of an OCD obsession with details, sameness and simplicity. Rather than bland and boring I think he adds great interest to this board. I think he needs medication and perhaps some therapy, but he seems happy and is interesting to read. YMMV, but I suggest if you don't see the charm in our diminuative friend that you improve your overall mental health by not clicking on the thread. I for one am enjoying the show.
